Cattaraugus What am I missing ?
Looking at a Catt. on E'bay. Must be missing something. Having problems transferring to this site but the number is 200873829529. Gives the Catt. number as 21269C. According to Catt numering system it should have only one bolster and a clip blade. Mint price in my books $350. Price now at $511. Bidder has 41% of his bids to this seller. Looking for any input.

Is it 21269C or 212690?
Possibly, part of the zero was removed by the buffing wheel that was generously applied to the blades.

Re: Cattaraugus What am I missing ?
I'm coming up with the same breakdown on the pattern number as Patch. The 1 should indicate one bolster, the C a clip blade or candystripe handles. Houston Price lists the 21269C as a folding hunter and a 22169 as a serpentine jack.

Re: Cattaraugus What am I missing ?
Ritchie and Stewart's reprint of the Cattaraugus catalog shows the 21269 on page 88. It is a bareheaded swell center jack.

Re: Cattaraugus What am I missing ?
In the Dewey ferguson book they say the bottom bolster is a cap instead of a bolster so the numbers are correct.

Re: Cattaraugus What am I missing ?
I've just gone through the Ritchie and Stewart catalog reprint pretty carefully. I cannot find a single instance of a knife with the pattern number "x1xxx" which has two bolsters or a bolster and a cap. That is to say, the pattern number convention that says the second numeral "1" indicates a bareheaded knife is completely consistent.
Just checked Robert Mayes knife album which contains about 15 pages of reprinted catalog pages for Cattaraugus knives (different from the above), same result.

Very interesting, according to that catalog page, the knife is correct. MB, where did you find that cut?

Re: Cattaraugus What am I missing ?
I dug around in my sock drawer and I came up with this beat up one with the same pattern number: 21269C. I also questioned it because of the spear blade and the 2 bolsters. Since the pattern code said one bolster and a clip blade, I thought it was bogus. So, this explains part of it.
But the bone is black. I thought it might be comp, but it's very glassy and smooth and seems like a deep-dyed black bone, not the worm-groove you normally see on these Catts. And the code ends in "9". So, maybe it's one of those "famous" ones that got assembled out of parts when the factory closed. Or the handles could have been replaced, I guess. Looks original though.

Don't worry about that black bone, they made some with that color. They also made some salesman samples with brown worm grooved bone on one side and dark jigged bone on the other side.

Since you said it three times, I have to believe you! But it's too beat to be valuable. Bernard Levine calls these "stabber" jacks.
The black bone is very interesting, though.

That's composition, look at the curled shrinkage near the bolstersDragunski wrote:I dug around in my sock drawer and I came up with this beat up one with the same pattern number: 21269C. Dragunski.
Some of the old timers told me if you are going to use the hot pin test on a knife always find a inconspicuous spot. I thought about that when I saw your pics and had to smile.
