Camillus 72 tang stamp question *EDITED

I can't post pictures, but you all know what I am describing.

There is a 72 with a federal shield. The tang stamp is the usual three lines - Camillus, New York, USA.

Here's my question. There is a fourth, much lighter line on the tang which reads - UMC. This is just under the USA. The C could be an O, but I'm pretty sure it is a C. I have not seen this fourth line on any other 72's. Does anyone know what this means?

I saw that. I'm watching that knife just out of curiosity. I looked at that for about ten minutes when it came up in my saved searches and I don't have a clue what that's about.

Unless, Camillus made some Remingtons and the guy who was stamping tangs was hung over and forgot to change the stamp when he started the new order. Being hung over and not wanting to be there in the first place he just ground off part of the stamp and re-stamped the blade.

When you don't have a clue, make something up.

I know toward the end of operations Camillus would grind off tang stamps and usually etch a tang stamp on the blank tang. This info is from Tom Williams.

That appears to be a partially removed Remington tang stamp that has been over stamped (not etched) with a Camillus stamp.
Tom also said they had thousands of tang stamps in the factory and there was nothing stopping anyone from grabbing an earlier stamp and using a 40 year old stamp on a new knife.
