Re: WHAT ARE YOU CARRYIN RIGHT NOW? WHAT IS YOUR FAV EDC?
Phillip, I like those old timers! I'm always on the look out for good old USA schrade knives. I always thought they were underrated while they were still being made here. I know they were by me. But once they moved to china folks finally realized how good of a using knife they were. They sure had good metal in them.
Scott, do let us know how that Utica works out. I've been eyeing them for a while now.
Oh, and both the railsplitter and the slim line trapper ride real good in the pocket. Real good.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU CARRYIN RIGHT NOW? WHAT IS YOUR FAV EDC?
This one came in the mail yesterday. I had been eyeballin' one of these for about a year, and finally decided to buy one - a German Eye Brand whittler.
It's 3 5/8, so is the same length as a Schrade 863 or Camillus 72, and has the same ballon pattern. The coping blade and pen blade are quite a bit smaller than the Schrade or Camillus, but big enough to do the job. It has a lower profile as well - when closed the main clip does not ride as high, so it should be a little more pocket friendly. Excellent - loud! - snap on all three blades, and it is a true whittler with the main clip resting between the two secondary blades when closed. It does not have a wedge in the back between the springs, so is the same width all the way down the frame. This knife has some butt-ugly stag on it, but that is par for Eye Brand and doesn't bother me. Fit and finish seem to be excellent, but it is as dull as a butter knife (I will fix that pretty quick).
I added few pics to show it compared to the Schrade.
All in all, I think I am going to really like this one - it is going into the pocket today!!

NICE UNK! I love that 72. I had the exact knife and traded it and kicked myself in the rear ever since.

That Schrade 863 bears a REMARKABLE similarity to a Camillus 72.
But then it does not have a Sabre ground main.... YES!

That's because the Schrade 863, the Ulster 63 and what ever Imperial called theirs are all clones of the Camillus 72. I throw 'em all in the same pot. Check the catalogs and you'll notice Camillus dropped the saber grind in 1991 or 1992.Just Plain Dave wrote:That Schrade 863 bears a REMARKABLE similarity to a Camillus 72.

Dave, Jerry,
The Schrade Walden 863s had a sabre grind. In 1974 they stopped using the Schrade Walden stamp - and I think this is the time they went to the flat grind.
There's a couple of Walden and non-Walden 863s on e-bay right now. The Walden's seem to go a little higher.

Yes, the Schrade Walden 863 NOS w/tube I have, has a saber ground blade. The Schrade N.Y. USA 863 I carry has a flat ground blade. For the most part, across the board, the Schrades seem to go for more than the ones by Camillus.Unk wrote:Dave, Jerry,

Fellers, all nice knives!
I gotta get my BSA047 Camillus whittler into the lineup soon.
I changed out my rotation. I put up my cases and got out the Queens and Bokers. Today is a beer barrel copperhead. Understated pattern to me, beat out by the trapper but much friendlier in my hand.
