I only get a chance to do my "knifeing" (as my wife calls it) in the morning, so I'm sorry that I keep coming to the diner to talk about this one knife, but really, I just like hanging out with you guys. It really does feel like stoping at your favorite diner every morning, and you know there's always that one guy that just keeps going on about the same story. Well, I guess that's me, but i got it back now, so I can move on and talk about something else. (Btw, the knife works great! I didn't think the improvement would be as dramatic as it turned out to be!)
Anyway, idk about you guys, but I rarely ever find anybody in my personal life that is interested in hearing about my interest in pocket knives and such, so I hope you don't mind that I'm useing off topic threads for on topic discussion. (Sip)

Mike, I think the very purpose of a forum like AAPK is to bring like-minded folks together for mutual enjoyment of their avocation; if we all lived in Raleigh or Richmond we could do this in person. Seems to me you are using this thread for the purpose Scott intended it to be used for when he started it. OH

I'm glad Mike brought this up because I've wanted to say this for quite some time and this is the perfect context

Y'all may have noticed that's how I treat the entirety of AAPK. In my opinion the forum is not a compendium of statements but a conversation with give and take from as many as cares to chime in. If a thread goes "off topic" so be it because that's the way conversations are in real life.

Scott started this thread with that in mind and I started the "Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things" for the same reason. No theme. A place to talk to people. I for one am glad to have a place to chat without going to a chat room.

Many days, AAPK is my entertainment. I feel I'm mostly successful in maintaining decorum and I hope I'm never (or at least seldom) chided for the way I choose to comport myself on the forum. I'm referring to general behavior and not specific incidents where the wheels have gotten a little wobbly. We're humans. Given sufficient provocation, that happens to everyone occasionally.

Edit: I guess what I've used so many words to say is as simple as, for me, AAPK is my corner barber shop, local diner, pot belly stove at the general store or where ever else friends and acquaintances gather for companionship and good conversation. It just happens to be in a community of knife minded people.

to Jerry. Even though I am relatively new here after a 5 year hiatus I get entertained and more knowledgeable from reading here. There's not a bunch of squabble like a bunch of teenage girls that can be found other places. I have met a few individuals through this forum that I talk on the phone with on a weekly or even daily basis. This is just a great place to hang out.

Back when i was a senior in high school (Class of 1980) I worked at my local town diner. Always saw the same folks in the same seats. I miss the small town......

When I as about 15 I worked at the Sterling family restaurant in downtown Wauseon. Local restaurant/ diner/ I scream parlor. I know it was the real deal cuz it ain't there no more, and ain't nuthin replaced it. I personally think every kid should have to bus tables wash dishes and dip a triple dip for at least a year before they can drive.

Boy, Mike. There's a lot of things kids should be required to do before they're allowed to run wild with a drivers license, cell phone and I-pad. Bus tables in a diner/soda shop (too much competition from illegals). Pitch bales of hay five high and a tie (no need these days. Now the baler automatically shoots the bales into a high sided wagon. Sigh.). Bag groceries (now retired people do that work). Deliver newspapers (hardly anyone reads newspapers anymore). Mow yards. Etc, etc, etc...


Edit: I'm proud to say my 17 year old granddaughter got a job hostessing in a restaurant last year shortly after she turned 16. At Thanksgiving she told me she was training to join the wait staff because she could earn more money there. Grandpa is bustin' his buttons.

It was a REAL service station too, wash BOTH front & rear windows, check the oil, inspect wiper blades, offer to check the tires or just check them if you weren't busy.

My three oldest girls started working in a nursing home at 14.
My boy built his own lawn mower from a couple old mowers and was mowing lawns in town at about 10 or 11.

Now days they won't even think about letting a kid work until they are at least 16!
Our laws are made by idiots!

Scott, I've had a few working stints in the "food service industry". Back in high school I worked at the local drive in eatery serving burgers, fries, chili dogs, coke floats and bananna splits among other things. Everything they sold was good. Those of us who worked there got to eat free while on duty. Man did I put on some pounds.

Several years later I worked one winter (while laid off from my brick laying job) at the local pool room and grill. I was a cook, server, and part time bouncer. You could get pretty much whatever you were looking for right there, including a good ole head thumpin' if you got out of line. The pool tables are long gone now and it's a much more civilized place complete now with lady customers and workers. But back in the day, that old pool room was a pretty rough place.
