A recent hawkbill rebuild

Post by muskrat man »

This is an example of the beauty and the beast projects that I do. First we start off with a "made in usa" hawkbill. It is a dead ringer of a kutmaster from the mid 1960's. Probably made on contract for someone I would suppose. Blade is badly rusted with some fairly deep pits, no walk and talk whatsoever, the knife is literally falling apart. Oh, and I forgot to mention the big "F" carved into the one handle.

I take it apart, clean out all the rust, regrind the blade, true the edge and remove all the rust and pits. Tinker with the tang and spring a little and it now has walk and talk. Then I put it back together, fill inthe "F" in the handle, sand everything down and remove all the dings and bad scratches after I re pin the scales. The old pins were very loose and badly sunken, so I just replaced the with flush fitting brass just like the originals. Flush steel rocker and butt pins. A little polishing and there you have it one good ol' USA made hawkbill ready for any pocket.

The blade was given a fine stain brushed finish, not sure why it glared so much? Looks better in person though.

What did you use to fill in the "F"? Sawdust from sanding with super glue or just plain old laquer and sawust? (that last is real old fashioned  kinda dates me there).
