I need help determinimg what my pocket knife is worth

Post by Evasp »

I got a knife from my grandfather the other day and I want to know what it is worth. The knife is made by Utica Cutlery Co. and it is white/yellow with brown swirls. It has a lightning bolt shaped "s" on it. If anyone has any information on this knife please let me know.

Welcome to AAPK. Unfortunately, with thousands upon thousands of variations of pocketknives having been made over the last couple of centuries it is virtually impossible to evaluate a pocketknife without a few good, sharp photo's. Take some photo's and add them to this post, you should get a valid answer quickly. OH
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

Best thing to check is the "completed listings" on ebay for the true value of what knife folks are willing to pay...

Both Willie and Mike Losicco have posted similar knives in the past.

Value is going to depend on condition.

Post some pics or scans.

There are many variables for sure, but I'd venture a wild guess you've got a $ 35 - $50 knife.

Here I go sticking my nose into somebody else's business, but here goes. Whenever I read about someone wanting to know the value of a knife that came from a family member, I cringe up. If my grandfather had given me a knife, it would be priceless. There would be no need to find the street value. Sir, if you sell that knife, I can almost guarantee that you will regret it. Just put it in with your life mementoes and get it out occasionally and think about the man who gave you the knife.

Sorry if you find me out of line.

I have a 34OT Schrade that belonged to my Grandfather.
The clip blade has been modified to a Wharncliffe, so I doubt it would bring $5 on ebay.
But I would not take $500 for it. It is part of my family heritage, the memories it brings back to me of him setting in his little shed working on a piece of maple burl to make a clock, is precious beyond any monetary value!

In reality Utica knives are not high value knives as a general rule. Check the completed sales on ebay and you will see most sell for under $25, many in the $5 to $10 range.

I agree with what Randy and others said, you will regret it.

::groove:: to Randy. I have 3 knives from both my Grandpas and while they might not bring $20 for all 3 on ebay they are priceless to me.
