Re: My latest Schrade
Received this budding knife in the mail today. In the list it says ivory budder. The seller told me it was imitation ivory budder. Did they make both.

Re: My latest Schrade
With no evidence to back me up, I am sure in my own mind that the early ones had ivory tips. The later ones were imitating something, were they not? And that would be ivory tipped budding/grafting knives. And I believe that Schrade was a player in this field early on. They appear in the pre-war catalogs. Your knife appears to have black celluloid handles, a particular type of cell which has shown itself to be very stable in the Schrades.Shearer wrote:Received this budding knife in the mail today. Re: My latest Schrade
tongueriver .Do you think they say imitation ivory so the "do gooders " don't have the listing pulled off Ebay. In the 1953 catalog they say genuine ivory.

I have no way of knowing. I think that both materials were used at different times.Shearer wrote:tongueriver .Do you think they say imitation ivory so the "do gooders " don't have the listing pulled off Ebay. In the 1953 catalog they say genuine ivory.

That SCC is a beauty! Great full blades, doesn't look like any outgassing on it either.

Re: My latest Schrade
I went to the OKCA (Oregon Knife Collectors Association) Mini-Show today.
Got a bunch of knives to sell in my store, but I picked up this one for my collection.
I have been looking for a 14OT for 6 years and finally found one at a good price.
It has some minor spotting on the blade, but it was never used.
It came out of a wall display & the guy found a better example.
I was pretty excited to finally find one!

Those 13 OT and 14 OT fixed blades are some of the most practical that Schrade made. Really good stuff. Dale, now you need a user to keep your fingernails clean!

Nice find Dale. The longer the search the sweater it is when you finally find it. Curious to know if you leave it as is or clean it up a little?

Re: My latest Schrade
If I recall correctly those were usually finished out with a blade etch.
I believe they were also made for a couple other companies than Schrade as well, as SFOs.
Cal, Eric, Hal or someone else can set us straight on them.

I ended up with a few hawkbills Schrade 136.Now I have three with different tang stamps and the latest has more squarer handles.
In the photo of the three the first one had been well polished.1/has no number 2/ has number on back of blade

Re: My latest Schrade
Shearer, that 1st picture has a business name on the handle that I think is still operating. If I read it right doesn't it say Apopka Growers Supply? Apopka is a town in Central Florida north of Orlando where I was raised. Apopka is an Indian word meaning "potato eating place". Also there is Lake Apopka, the 3rd largest lake in Florida, over 30,000 acres. Used to be a great fishing lake in the years before 1960 or so. Agricultural pollution caused its' decline. Treefarmer

Re: My latest Schrade
Treefarmer.Yes it does have APOPKA on the handle.Out here ( Australia ) they introduced European Carp and now they have taken over most of rivers and lakes. They make the water muddy and this kills the native fish.

Shearer, I should have included in my 1st response the question, Did you get that particular knife from the US or did it find its' way to Australia some other way? Treefarmer

Re: My latest Schrade
I finally have a couple USA made Schrades to add, an 8OT and a 125OT single blade, liner lock hunter in box with leather sheath. My farming Dad loves his 8OT and carries it wherever he goes, that knife does everything.
