W R Case & Son's 61051 on ebay

Post by olderdogs1 »

My question on this knife is on the blade. Is that the correct profile?? Any other comments appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

I know very little about anything but that knife to me just looks wrong... the bone, pins, blade you name it, surely someone with knowledge will come in and point out the truths

The bone looks fine, early Rogers.

The blade is obviously short, I wonder if someone has ground down the kick to make the point of the blade seat beneath the liners?

You might ask for a picture of the bottom of the kick to see if you can see evidence of grinding. For $950 ($799 11/20/12), that shouldn't be difficult. The other issue, of course, is the relatively short spine area in relation to the long swedged area. I can't find another example of this particular profile in my reference material, however, the blade does look genuinely old, and the pattern number stamp would be correct for the knife.

It might also be worthwhile to ask for a picture of the pattern number stamping.

Awesome... Do you know how many times I've seen early rodgers bone and had no idea what I was looking at and I still don't even after getting steve's book which has good examples of it...I think you have to be around the actual knives to get a sense of what is real and what is fake next best thing is probably Steve's book...

The oldest knive I have pictures of in this pattern are tested knives. The blades look entirely different. I agree that the Rogers Bone is great, mainly concerned that in addition to the blade being short and possibly having the kick ground that maybe the top of the blade has been altered. Has anyone seen this blade in an old W R Case & Sons or elsewhere in a Case knife?? Thanks for the answers and opinions.

I wonder if the blade may be from an 048 pattern.

Thanks, Steve
The 048 blade does look similar. I am not sure whether it has a pattern # stamped on the blade or not. That blade just looks really strange to me in that knife. I really like the knife and was considering bidding on it but really don't want to if the blade is not original or if it has been reprofiled.

There is a pattern number stamped on the back, as there should be. You can see part of it in this picture (the "6"). It might be instructive to see a picture of the whole pattern number.

I sent a question to the seller about the pattern number and he replied that it was stamped 61051 on the back of the tang . ::shrug:: He does , however , state in his description that the blade is very full and could be made near mint , but the blade appears to be about 1/4" short in addition to having a strange profile for that particular pattern .

The closest I can find in terms of the blade profile is a blade for a 94 pattern 4 1/4" toothpick. That blade has a very short spine area and a very long swedged area. The older 48 patterns are quite similar however they seem to me to be slightly longer in the spine. The problem with the 94 pattern blade is that the ones I have access to (very limited) have regular pulls, not long pulls.

It is certainly not inconceivable to me that this blade profile is authentic, however, I haven't seen any evidence.

Caveat emptor.

I've added a picture of my 61094 Case Bradford toothpick for comparison to the subject knife (coincidentally it also has early Rogers bone handles). This blade is down substantially however, I think that you can see what I'm talking about in terms of a short spine area in relation to swedge area, even though the blade is somewhat short overall.

I have never seen any of the Case toothpick patterns with long pull.

Hey Guys,

Can't find this knife on ebay. What is the closed length???

Did some research and I personally don't think that is a 051 blade, reprofiled or not. I agree with Steve that it might be a 048 blade. Not sure if the 048 came in long pull though.

How about the bolsters, look kind of flat to me. My tested era 051 and the pics of pre Tested 051s show that the guard continues across the top of the bolster. In other words, there is a hump that connects the 2 sides of the guard across the bolster.

Would like to know the length. Regardless, I don't like the feeling I get from "my read" of the entire knife. No expert, just my opinion. Others may vary.

Jerry, Good point on the bolsters didn't see em ::shrug:: They look like they have been under a flat iron. Jim Sargents 6th Edition Knives & Razors illustrates Long Pulls on both a Bradford and Tested Era 048 pattern. However, looking at the length of the LP its much longer than the pull on the knife here. I'm thinking that due to the short blade, the spine has been reground. This may be why its looks so funny. When I see that knife I have to wonder why that pull isn't longer with that blade lengh. Who knows, but not one I would want, too many ??? ::shrug:: BH

Here's a couple bow ties for reference. The W.R. Case & Sons is from the 70's, not sure about the Hammer Brand. The Case knife hasn't been sharpened.
