Bad day with Hubertus

Yesterday I deceided to bring out a couple knives and put some Renwax on them. When I got to these two Hubertus' knives the problems started. The Liliput would not open all the way and the 4"er droped the kick spring out on the floor. Both knives have been stored open in my cabinet for about 8 months. When I put them in they worked great. I had sent the Liliput to Bill D 2 years ago to reseat the spring because the blade was peeking out. I'm sure he hammered the kick spring back in as far as he could. Now the blade barely sits in the liner but at least it's not ripping holes in my pockets anymore. I gave the liliput a little shower with WD40 and played with it for about 15 minutes and now it does open but no where near as hard as it once did. Then I reset the 4"er's kick spring and that open weakly as well. I'm starting to wonder if these knives were put together by a Shoemaker.

I have them all fixed up. The Liliput loosened up after I cleaned it out and fired it about 50 times. The 4 incher is all set as well. I positioned the kicker then taped it in using a screwdriver and a small hammer. Now it's snapping open and locking up tight. I feel like a new man

I got a little frustrated with mine, some years back. Wound up sellin it at a gun and knife show. Mind you there was nothing really wrong with it, I just didn't like the way it operated. They do make some nice stag handles though.

Sorry to hear of your problems;I have several Hubertus autos and have never had a problem with them.Are they of recent manufacture? I have owned mine for at least twenty years.Here is a pic of mine;the bottom four are Hubertus and the top one is an old R.J.Richter.

I've owned the 2 that are a problem for 10 years or less. My older knives are great. Please correct me if I'm wrong but as I understand the Hubertus process they send their knives over here without the kickspring installed then a local dealer installs it. I have read in a forum or three that the people doing it now are lacking in skill and pride in craftsmanship. I've even heard that when they are out of parts they make anything do. One of my friends found a thin kickspring like you find in a Chinese auto in his brand new knife. I know somebody is going to say it never happens but they do leave themselves open to this kind of criticism. It's a shame that a company like that can't find a central clearing house for their imports. I think I'm going to limit my Hubertus auto buys to older knives that were built with pride. They are some great looking knives though

Well I'm back here to tell you all the problems I had with these 2 knives are back. It seems like the kicker only has enough power to crank them open half way. The only time they work well is right after I hit them with WD40. I have other knives that are 60 years old that work perfectly all the time. It's a shame because both knives are beautiful. Problems like this are the furthest thing from my mind when I shell out so much money. All I did was take them out of the box fire them a few times then put them open in my cabinet with 100 other knives. Just for the record my cabinets are in a temp controlled room with bags of desicant littered around in each drawer. Hubertus is the only product that has failed me Trying to contact Hubertus about their warranty is laughable. Besides both knives are over 10 years old. I think I'm done buying Hubertus autos.

well thats unfortunate as they seem to be a decent edc ? i only own one Huby , a guardian ....and the kicker has "walked " out a bit from time to time . i have heard that they are assembled abroad . probably to avoid the hassles of "the man" haha . Anywhoooo ,,,i`ve notice that when the weather changes , so does the functioin of some of my automatics . kinda like predicting the weather from my aching bones means rains a commin. honestly , most of the leverlocks all look decent but " alike " to me and i havent quite aquired a taste for them .... Yet BTW ....Happy Thanksgiving all .

Modern Hubertus autos are designed with a replaceable kickspring. This design allows the springs to "walk" out of the retaining slot. I make custom springs and dovetail them in so they don't move. Unfortunately, this requires disassembling the knife and is expensive.

Not trying to hawk my oil but you should get you some quick release oil for them , knives love it an it eats rust ,t

I second Tank's recommendation. Quick Release works very well on most knives.
Some lever locks prefer lithium automotive grease.

I like the looks of this knife At the risk of sounding like an Idiot what did MM do to it? Was it a Ram's horn leverlock that had the 16 ga. puller added to it or did he customize the whole knife scales and all?

The tang marking on that particular knife is "Cade" on the front and "Bill DeShivs" on the rear. That particular knife is a converted Italian lever lock. The rest are Hubertus.
