Affordable Traditional Slip Joint with Half Stops

Hi gang,

I'm interested in finding traditional style pocket knives with half stops. This might be sacrilege but I'm partial to Rough Riders due to the price point. I know I know... I love Case of course and some day want to pick up a GEC but can't afford it right now... In the meantime what are your favorite inexpensive slippys with half stops? ($10-$20) Thanks!

One option I'd suggest you take a look at is the Boker Plus line of slipjoint knives. I'm not sure all of them have half stops, but at least some patterns do. My personal opinion is they are a step up from the Rough Riders in quality.

Was thinking the same thing Phil, and agree they are a step up from RR.....maybe 2.
I wasn't sure if any of the patterns have half stops or not so I hesitated to post.
The LockBack Boker Plus is a great knife for the $$ also.

I've reviewed a couple RR's and frankly, I've been impressed. Hard to find a more durable knife for $10.00!
I actually have a bunch of 'em listed on eBay right now.....

scott, sorry to disagree with you on the durability of rr's. i too was seemingly impressed with their product until i really needed to use em. my opinion on rr's, you get what you pay for, and i would never recommend them to anyone.
here is what happened to these with just the minimum of use,,,,,,,the whittler was broke cutting a tick in half, and the muskrat broke while peeling an apple.
although they look good

they are only eye candy

i guess they would make good stocking stuffers for people you don't like all that much

I had a Rough Rider once....the shield fell off the day after I got it never to be found again...then the blade developed wobble the next day.
Sent it off in the next pos roundtable.
Sorry to whoever received it!
I have however heard of others that have had good luck with them, so to each his own!

I think the original poster would be better off spending his money on an older US made knife, should be able to find one on ebay for 20 bucks with half stops. Some of the old Hammer Brand jacks have half stops....along with great steel and gator like snap..
Also some of the Colonial two blade jacks have half stops as well..
just my opinion!

Jeff -- Welcome to AAPK.

I have a Marbles Doctor's knife I carried for a while. Other than having been sharpened, it's in original out of box condition and it has half-stops on both blades. You could re-profile and sharpen the spatula blade if it doesn't suite your fancy the way it is. It's 3-1/8" closed.

i bought a ebay LOT of 8.........sold all but one BECAUSE of all the RR BASHING ON HERE....
the one i kept, i have used as my full time whittlin knife(a congress) for 2-3 years NOW!!!!

IT HAS NEVER FAILED...HARDLY EVER NEEDS SHARPENING... FIT AND FINISH AWESOME...TIGHTER BLADES THAN ANY.. "NEW" ..CASE KNIFE I HAVE "EVER" OWNED.....

not sayin they are GOOD or BAD......just the one i have IS AWESOME!!!
luck of the draw? probably.......
only good one they EVER made?? not likely......
so are there good ones out there??? YES....

just my PERSONAL opinion....... from MY experience.

Didn't mean to start a fight truth is I don't use those rough riders much so maybe that's why I haven't had problems... that said i love the RR barlow knife I have, great fit an finish, sharp and nice rounded bolsters. the blades are a little stiff (i've heard the term "nail breaker" used) but better stiff than loose... anyway thanks for the tip in the boker knives... I'll check em out... thanks to Jerry as well. looks like a great knife!

Just sharin' experiences is all....like everything else, opinions vary!
Sure sounds like Junebug has gotten his money's worth and then some from his RR congress, I'm not bashing anything, just relaying the experience I had with mine, it just happened to not be a favorable one. For the price you can certainly afford to give one a test run and see if you get a keeper or not!

i listened here...thought that it would be a good idea to UNLOAD them....i am NOT UPSET I DID!!!
i kept the ONE congress.....and it just so happened to be a GOOD ONE!
seriously i lucked out!!!, i know this deep down
just sayin NOT ALL ARE TRASH.....and for the $4.99 shipped i spent,was worth my time to try the BRAND.

that said...i have NO plans to buy another!!!!!
and wouldn't buy unless buying it in person ,so i could REALLY look it over!

For the record, I've had some that were very good knives, like this one Scott sent me, and then others I have owned that didn't last but a few months before losing it's snap. Spotty quality control IMO

So that's where that ended up. I sent that to Scott for review when he first started doing that, letting him know if he didn't want to keep it my feelings would not be hurt.

I thought the knife was a bit "thin". The only way I can explain it is it lacked "substance".

Right Jerry, however as thin as it is, it does have some good walk and talk to it. I was very surprised there was any at all, after the few I had owned before. Don't get me wrong, I ain't buyin any more of these, don't need to. There are many more better made knives out that I want rather than these Chinese.
