blade rubbing

Hello all,

I just purchased a nice looking trapper knife (with prime stag handles) that is supposed to be in "new" condition, but there are blade rubs on the clip blade, right were the etching pattern is, and am debating a return. I know rubs are fairly common, but how much do they detract from the actual value of the knife? If I decide to sell this sometime down the road, would it be a major contention?

Anything less than mint subtracts from a mint condition value IMO. The subtraction varies depending on who wants it and it's age, rarity etc.

I would factor in how much I spent. If it was an awesome deal then you may still be in the clear. It sounds like you bought the knife from an auction site? If so and the knife was improperly described you have a limited period of time for a return. I wouldn't take the loss just because blade rubs are "fairly" common, if I paid full price.

No pics just yet. Just received it. They look like scratches (basically, I think, rubs are euphemistic for scratches), and they usually come from one blad "rubbing" against the other when the blade is folded/unfolded.

Blade wobble (the blades wiggling side to side in the open position wich makes them close/open off center) or they don't seat properly in between the liners and either bump each other or the liners when opening/closing because the F&F is off.

I can't give you all of the technical terms but those "rubs" "scratches" may get worse as the knife is opened and closed unless a mechanic rights the ship IMO.

Since "Prime Stag" is an etching W.R. Case used on some knives I'll make the leap of faith that we're talking about a Case Prime Stag Trapper. Case has excellent customer service and a great repair department that will repair the bladefall of the knife and replace the etching. Tell 'em Elvis sent ya.

lol...Thanks, Elvis. Yes, it's the Case Prime Stag Trapper. It's gorgeous, and I was disappointed when I saw the scratches. The seller (I purchased this from a store on Ebay) has agreed to exchange this for another one. Now, I have to wait on pins & needles again, hoping that the stag on the replacement knife has no fissures or cracks.
