I am not a collector or an expert by any means but after several hours of searching, I'm having no luck with identifying this knife.

WWII folding survival machete. There was once a guard that went with it but it's not uncommon for those to get lost along the way.
Lots of pictures here -- http://www.google.com/search?q=wwii+fol ... 24&bih=603
Sorry I can't help you with a value but since it's a Case, that always seems to help elevate the price.
Welcome to AAPK.

Actually, there weren't all that many made Dave. They were made by three different companies that I know of.

Ebay is a very good indicator of perceived value.
There are 21 for sale on eBay right now. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid= ... &_from=R40
There are 59 in completed auctions. The ones that sold went for $40 and up. Some way up but as usual, it's condition, condition, condition. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... 1&_ipg=100
