Any chance this knife left the factory like this or did some body use this knife to practice his skills?

Maybe, but it was good practice for them. All they needed to do was remove the center pin to do the work and since the center pin was replaced with nickel-silver instead of the usual brass, it looks like that's just what they did. But filework on a Delrin handled knife?.....my guess is just practice. Otherwise they probably would've put better (nicer) scales on it.

Exactly, they were honing (pun intended) their skills for more advanced work later on. I've heard of some people buying new Rough Riders to practice their knife repairing skills, I think thats a god idea myself.
