Ed. Wusthof Soligen

Post by RBT »

Long time collector but this is my first post....
I recently purchased a stag handled Ed. Wusthof-Soligen with trident. It has one long blade, a "corkscrew", a file blade, a leather punch (I think that is what it is anyway) and short, curved blade. The short curved blade is unlike anything I've ever seen. It has a sharp edge but the edge is like a curb. This short blade also a hole just below the nail catch.
How old is this knife? Any history of this Wusthof. And what is that small, curved blade for?

::welcome:: RBT

Does the blade in question look like the one on the knife cato posted on this thread?

If so my guess would be a version of a gut hook.

If you can post a picture it would be most helpful ::nod:: Someone with way more knowledge will be along soon enough.

Hi RBT.......welcome to AAPK

It's a champagne blade. Can we see a picture of the entire knife with the blades open?
We love pictures here. I have some history of the company that i will dig out later.

Thanks for the info about the blade. Here is a pic of the entire knife.
Any info about the company and this particular knife is appreciated.
I've been collecting "oddities" for some time time and will post more later.
Thanks

Hi RBT,

After enlarging your picture, the blade seems to have an recess in the edge.
I think this is a shell extractor not a champagne blade as i stated earlier.
Although i see the same blade in knives with shell extractors on the bolster.
So..... maybe its a starter for extracting the shell. ::dang::

Since Dimitri abandoned us, we can sometimes only speculate but I think you were right the first time, Tim. I think it's a wine knife although the thing that stumps me and intrigues me is the the long thin "poker". Since I know next to nothing about wine except how to get it out of the bottle, I have to ask, what the heck would you use that for?

Here's a fancy schmancy, custom wine knife made by a Swedish craftsman named Kaj Embretsen. I show it for the similarities.

Yeah, sometimes there's no rhyme nor reason for the blade configuration, like the champaign knife with the glass cutter?? What's that all about?? ::shrug:: Or maybe it's not a glass cutter?? ::shrug::

W.A.G. here. I'm thinking that long slender "blade" just might be for punching a hole in the end of a cigar so it will draw properly. I'm fairly confident that the small hooked shape blade is a wire cutter for opening a champaigne bottle. Corkscrew is obvious.............Looks like a party knife to me. ::ds::

Notice the hole through the curved blade. That has to be a clue, I would suppose.

The reason for me to think it is not a champagne knife now is that the blade usually comes to a point and has a sharp edge.
Here is an photo of a knife from Lunawerks with basically the same blade and hole with a shell puller.

Tim

EDIT: I also added a photo of champagne blades.....

I'm lost!

If it is a shell puller, why the hole?
If it is champagne knife, why the shell puller?
Is is possible that the corkscrew was for medicine bottles, etc? Did not bottles come with cork stoppers at one time?

The hole is the most interesting thing to me..

RBT,

I have sent an e-mail with this link to the company.

It seems that they are now producing mostly kitchen knives.

I am wondering if the hole in the blade has a purpose or was needed in the making of it. ::hmm::

While similar in shape to a champagne foil cutting blade, this is a shell extractor blade. The hole in the blade is to extract "Lefaucheux" type pin fire shells by way of the pin.
