Broken IXl George Wostenholm barlow

I need to know where I can get a Broken IXL George Wostenholm single blade barlow knife repaired. The knife is broken on the part between the back of the blades pivot point & the first pin behind the bolster. Part of that piece is actually broken off & missing. I need to get it repaired for a friend. Not real familiar with this manufacturer. That part may be called the spring. I am still learning. Any info is appreciated. Thanks, Fred.

I should have mentioned that since that piece that is broken out & missing the blade will just fold back over. Nothing there to lock it in place once in the open position. Note the daylight in the 2nd pic. Thanks for the help. Fred

Although I can't really see the picture that well, your description above tells me that you need your backspring replaced. It is cheaper if you can find a knife with a less than full blade and swap out the backspring. The more expensive route is to have a backspring made if you can't find one.

I have a 4 inch stockman on my desk with the same problem. I will make 2 backspings though, because I want the steel to be the same hardness and all blades have the same snap. At this rate early 2008 looks about right.

Fortunately one backspring is simpler and who knows, maybe someone will have one on this site, Good Luck.

Muskrat Man might could help you, but I know he's awfully busy. Is that knife stainless or carbon ? I couldn't tell from the pic.

Hukk, that's really discouraging, hearing the 2008 timeline - I am SO sorry, my friend. But, please don't rush it - the relapse is even more painful.

I go to a pain management clinic on Aug. 20th, for evaluation. The Doc's have given up, trying to fix my back - now the goal is just for some relief... By that time, I hope to have everything "in" my new shop at least - using it is another matter.

Turkey, if all else fails, (and I mean ALL else) - ship it to me - I've got about 4,000 springs, I might possibly match it up, and send it back to you. Right now, I can't stand up long enough to repair it.

Thanks JR, pain is going to be a constant companion and will lessen, but part of that 2008 timeline is due to backlog before I get to play with my own stuff. I hope to spend a few hours every other day in the shop in September. I have 7 Scandi's, no sheaths but 7 Birdseye Maple displays. Then I have 4 skinners and 4 hunters with sheaths. 5 will be inlays of rattlesnake skin and I'm grateful for the work as I need to be doing more inlaid leather sheaths. And a few pocket knife repairs.
I have a Barlow design I want to work on along with some miscellaneous work on folders.
I am starting to think about getting a sewing machine for leather. Hand sewn inlays are a LOT of work!

Good luck with your back! I've been down that road and was lucky to have a good surgeon. I have arthritis in my back, shoulders, and knees and 7 surgeries in 2 1/2 years, guess I lived REAL HARD when I was younger. Actually there is some sort of disconnect, I don't feel pain until I have a big problem. I have been an adrenaline junkie for 35+ years and I'm only 51. Just never knew when to stop

Once again, Good Luck with your back, there is a lot that they can do.

Thanks Guys, I really appreciate it. I know where you are coming from with the back pain as I had sciatica nerve pain. Took a yr for it to go away then I picked up a log one day to throw on the fire, and was right back where I started. Just have to know your limitations once you injure it & take it easy.

Back to the knife. It must be stainless as it is 10 or more yrs old & still shining. The only thing on the blade though is IXL George Wostenholm Sheffield England.

I don't see anything real special about the knife. I was hoping to sell him a Case or H&R to replace it, but he wants this one fixed. Must be some sentimental value. (not sure I spelled that right). Well if nothing brakes soon I might just send it to you Ringmaster. I will exhaust all other avenues first since your in the pain your in. Appreciate the help. Fred

What do you want to know? They aren't really in business any more. They are a brand owned by The Eggington Group that bought up a load of names when they went bust. That company does still make some good knives.

Just a thought. Prolly be a lot easier to get into the repair/restore section and get one of our fine craftsmen to make a spring.
