Thanks jethro,
I have several tested large cokebottles a tested cattle- whittler and a stag jack.
Other than that all my case knives are older than the tested era.
I really love the old tested knives but i have to limit myself and leave them alone.
My knife sickness would empty my bank account. Theres just too many tested knives out there to be purchased.

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
I am guessing here that a Copperhead is a form of Jack knife due to the blade configuration - or is it a separate category? I bought this one last week - love the bone color (I could live without the commemorative engraving on the blades).

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Colonel -- Copperheads are usually a two blade jack with both blades on the same end and that "bump" on the blade well edge of the top bolster. Just like the knife you posted. And usually a clip and small pen blade. Usually.
On the other hand, I have one that's called a Copperhead Trapper which has a clip and spey blade.

Wow Rig you have some fantastic knives there! You too Old Hunter and zp4ja....and Jerry....for someone who claims that he's "not a Case guy", every once in a while I see you break out a pretty sweet lookin' Case knife!

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Okay Jerry, I get it now - the Copperhead is the design of the frame w/ handles - the blades can vary, but usually are installed as a Jack knife - there is still a lot for me to learn in the knifing business! Ps Thanks for the compliment Mike.

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
When I started buying pocket knives for something other than carrying, I bought mostly Case knives because that's the only brand I recognized besides Old Timers & Buck (which didn't trip my trigger). Most of my doctors knives are Case. After a while Case knives lost their appeal and if I hadn't stumbled across AAPK, I probably would have 25% of the knives I have today (or maybe I would have more straight knives).313 Mike wrote:....and Jerry....for someone who claims that he's "not a Case guy", every once in a while I see you break out a pretty sweet lookin' Case knife!

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Great jacks everybody!
Just wondering: Is it typical for a '74 31 pattern in smooth black to only be marked 31SAB on the reverse tang w no handle or blade#'s ? I just recieved one and it's my first 31 so I don't have another to compare it to. Haven't taken a pic yet, my camera is acting goofy. As soon as I can I will. i looked in Steves book but it doesn't mention anything about this stamp. It's probably completely normal
Thanks for info in advance

Cutty, I have three 31 patterns a 1974, a 1976, and a 1977 smooth black handles and all are only stamped 31SAB on the back of the main blade. Howdy Trevor, glad to see you back! Hope everything was alright for you and your family.Cutty wrote:Great jacks everybody!

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Already shown this one in the EDC thread and the picture thread, but want to add it to the "official" Case jackknife thread!

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Even though I'm not a big Case follower, I find more and more Case knives in my collection. The first pic is a Gunstock Christmas tree, CT215, SS. It was a gift from a good friend of mine. The next pic is a 10 dot Farmers jack, sometimes called a trapper also.

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Nice Danno, Cutty, OH and Bull!!! Real nice ones!
Here is a near mint CASE XX 62055 in Red Bone. This knife is beautiful, in my opinion. Really like this one! Pics don't do the red bone justice but they are red.

Re: Jacks or Better to Open...
Here is another 62055 Small Cigar, circa 1977', the year before they were discontinued. The 055 Small Cigar was never reintroduced and the 055 pattern number got inherited by the SeaHorse Whittler after that.
Don't want to derail the thread but I do tend to use the price guides as a "general reference". "General" being the key word here. Books for 30 bucks mint! Don't want to get into a debate on various opinions on value. Just find it hard to beleive that a mint 36 year old knife that has been discontinued for 35 years has that book value. Amazing!!! I will cut rocks with it before I would sell it for that much especially since I have more into the knife than that. Can you buy a new CASE knife for 30 bucks? Maybe, but it aint 36 years old.
Anyways, here it is. Near mint plus, 1977' 62055 Small Cigar in the late 70s' "Pretty Bone". Pile side has some nice white accents inhereint to this year and 78', 79' and 80'.
Regards, Jerry
