Blade wobble question?

Post by Cutty »

I have a B&S large stockman that I edc and use a lot. The main clip started getting a bit of wobble and there was the slightest seperation of the liner from the springs towards the same end.

So, going it alone without asking here first, I wrapped the bolster in a piece of glove leather and gave it a few taps with a hammer. The wobble and seperation is fixed with no damage or marks on the bolsters. The only thing is the pin is now protruding from the bolster on both sides. Not a huge ammount, were probably talking <64ths but it is visible and you can feel it.

My question is should I try to peine/tap the pin or do something else to try and lessen the seperation and wobble from coming back in the future? Not sure I can do it without making a huge mess of the bolsters but if it will remedy the problem in the future i'll give it a try.
I dig half stops!!

I am far from experienced but it will probably open back out and you will have your wobble again. For now, you could just wait and see.

Here is what I'd do.....Cut a slot wide and long enough to go around that pin, down the center of about a .005 or .006" feeler gauge, loosen the knife again just enough to slip the feeler gauge in place. Use a smooth block of steel and a hammer with a smooth face, then pein the pins over by first tapping around their edges. Take it slow and try to get both sides evenly. The feeler gauge should be a little tough to pull out. Usually, once a blade is just barely tight in the open position, it should be good to operate freely. I pein with the knife in the open position and check the operation after every tap once the feeler gauge has been removed (it's usually tight by then though). Hope some of my ramblings have helped.

Thanks guys ::tu::

I fully understand your instructions Elvis.

I'm going to give it a try in the next few days. That is if I don't get a case of tail feathers.

Elvis' advice is spot on! That is how I would address that problem.
