My latest Schrade

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

That is a good question but I had never tried it.................so I did.

I used Strike Anywhere Matches (what we would call a wooden kitchen match in the US) and the match striker pull worked nicely, however the burning sulfur from the match head did leave burn marks on the blade, most notably at the end of the pull where the stroke of the match ended. It brushed off with a brass wire brush, but the marks left by the match was quite distinctive.

The fact that I have not seen those marks on any match striker pulls may mean that they may not have been used very often for striking matches, or that since the invention and popularity of the pocket lighter people have not used matches as much.

I would imagine matches were used more in the days before the pocket lighter and when people smoked more cigars and pipes. I smoked a pipe for about 30 years and I often used wooden kitchen type matches as it is easier to get the fire down into the bowl, especially if the bowl is half smoked and I was relighting.

I don't think the match striker would work with the so-called "safety match" or with paper book matches. They need to be the old fashioned type that will strike on any surface that will provide sufficient friction.

I tried it a few months ago using kitchen matches; I never could get one to strike (did wear down several match heads).

To use a matchstriker, make sure the matches are "strike anywhere" not safety "strike on box" matches.

Image

They need a white tip. I found a box just like this, the knife did strike up the match, but the box striker panel worked a lot better. Like Dale mentioned it left burn residue in the striker.

I've traded around and got a 3 bladed stockman pattern, about 4 inches closed length, Ranger brand knife BUT........it's made with the Swinden key system that Schrade used and would easily pass for an 8OT Old timer if it were brown and had the Old Timer shield. It has saw cut delrin black handles with the round oval Ranger shield glued or melted into the handle just like the Old Timer knives. It has a tang stamp of Prov. RI. on it's main blade (can't remember the name on the main blade and can't get to it right now to check as the wife is sleeping near my cabinet that it's in. Many knots on head if I tried to get it now and awoke the Lady of the house ::doh:: ). I'll try to post the name thats on it's tang stamp as soon as possible. Sorry I have no way of posting a picture of the knife. It has thick blades like the Old Timer series knives, not thin blades like most of the Prov. RI. marked knives or other Ranger brand knives, and the blades are carbon steel. Main blade has long match striker pull with an etch of "Ultra Hone" on it. It has the heft and weight of a Old Timer series knife also, not as light a other Ranger knives of the same pattern I have like it. I have another black Ranger 3 bladed stockman and a yellow handled stockman of the same length. It has brass liners and pins, with no pins of any kind in the bolsters. Can anyone shed some light on how this knife may have came to be, Dale, thawk, Eric (ea42), anyone? A possible U.S.A. Schrade Copenhagen knife that got a different main blade put in it at the U.S.A. Schrade end of days? I know Schrade was throwing some strange knives together in the end of days. I don't think the main blade was put in after factory unless whom ever bought the Swinden Key machine did it post U.S.A. Schrade end of days sell out. The knife does not look to have been taken apart in anyway. Thanks for any opinions or information.

Aimus, I have two name brand knives (Frontier by Imperial and Old Cutler by Colonial) that are Swinden key knives - made by Schrade. Like you, I have seen some Ranger knives that appear to be Old Cutler/Schrade made and some that appear to be Colonial made - don't know for sure, but the lack of end pins sure says Schrade to me.

Just got this one.

735 ss (L) '57-'73
4 1/8"
Thick blade stock. A real handful. Only minor handling marks on the bolsters. Other than that it's dang near new.

I guess it could be Jerry. My knife has Ranger over Prov. RI. stamped on the blades but as I said it's more like a U.S.A. Schrade 8OT than any of my other Prov. RI. stamped knives, even the knives I have made like it with the same name and shield are not the same weight and don't have the thicker blades like this knife I've ran up on. I'm figuring since it's made with the Swinden Key system like all the other U.S.A. Schrade knives, it must have been made by Schrade, under contract? I don't know about that. ::shrug:: It could be an end of days put together knife. It's identical to a U.S.A. Schrade Copenhagen stockman knife I have except for the shield and the tang stamp differs. I like it no matter who made it. ::tu::

Keep that Old Cutler oiled! I have one exactly like it and it has the worst case of carbon staining of any knife I have ever owned. I didn't even use it. ::hmm::

OH I have some Frontier brand knives but have never looked at them to see if they are the Swinden Key or regular pinned bolster assembled knives. You have me wondering now. I'm going to dig them out and look at them. What has me scratching my knotty head is the Prov. RI. tang stamp on the main blade. I EDC'ed a large stockman Frontier knife for a long time. Great knives for the price when they were new. The master clip blade on the one I had was really good, a step or two above the other two blades of the knife on taking and holding an edge. Lost it at a lumber yard after cutting rope and tying down some boards. Left the knife on the tailgate with a blade still opened and drove off. Didn't miss it until I went to cut the boards free. I made a call back to the lumber yard but no one had turned in any found knives. Recon they never will. :(

Hi all, Here's some ( old yella's ) loved that movie.
The 835Y, this seems to be a 34 pattern, I'm thinking it's the same
except the yellow handles and called the plainsman.
Would this be right, or am I wrong again.

Gary.

PS.I got that wrong about the 835Y,someone will set it right.
