Knives Of Alaska?

Post by bonehead »

Can anyone tell me anything about the quality of these knives? I like the D2 tool steel and a couple of the larger fixed blades. I need one for camping this fall. Bonehead

Bonehead,

I'd would ask how "thick " the blade is !!!!! Seems to me from what I read on their website the blades are .100 " thick. This is about 3/32 of an inch. To me that is not too thick of a blade that would hold up under a number of camping / hunting uses.

Just my opinion !!!

Well, after reading some more and getting a little more educated on the subject .... Bark River Knives are about .156 " thick. Which makes the Bark River Knives 1/2 again as thick as the Knives of Alaska. Much easier for me to visualize 1/16 , 1/4 or whatever vs. 1/10 of an inch.

Id say the quality is so so...
The only one I have has rubber handles attached to a slightly warped (very thin) blade. I returned to the store and looked for a straight one... They were all warped.

Bonehead,
Dean mentioned the Bark River knvies in his post. You might want to take a look at some of their knives if you are in the market for a good fixed blade. I'm very impressed with the two I have. (Bravo 1 and Gunny models )

Mike Stewart @ Bark River knives is making some of the best fixed blades for the
price range out there. When he was at Marble's from 1997-2002, they made some of the best knives
in their 110 yr history.
I have some of them in my store with 52/100 bladesteel, very top shelf steel
Check em out, you cannot go wrong with a "Barkie" tho
Good luck on your hunt

No matter where Mike Stewart goes, from Pacific to Blackjack to Marbles to Bark River, GREAT knives go along with him.

I already have several Effingham Blackjacks and a couple of Gladstone Marbles, all from the Mike Stewart years. Now I'm saving my pennies for a Bark River Gunny or maybe Bravo-1

Jerry those are the two Bark River models I own. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either one.

I can also vouch for the Bravo-1, as well as the Northstar - a great bushcraft style knife.

You can't go wrong with Bark River.

Agree wholeheartedly that Bark River makes the best fixed blades. You can’t go wrong w/ any knife you get from them. These are “lifetime” knives, meaning that these will last a lifetime and then some. You can never go wrong buying the best quality that you can afford.
