Should this be under warranty?

The Queen Cutlery Company manufactured knives in Titusville Pennsylvania for 96 years. The company opened its only factory there in 1919 and commenced to make some of the best US crafted cutlery you will find. Unfortunately, the Titusville manufacturing plant closed down in 2018.

Should this be under warranty?

Post by wazu013 »

Here's a Baby sunfish that I bought new back in 2006. It came with pin cracks in both scales at the center pin and the secondary blade tang hits the tip of the main blade keeping it from closing without help. Check out the pics and tell me if you think I was crazy to ask Queen to repair it under their "Lifetime warranty". Let me just tell you that 5 years ago they refused. I have sent knives to Case and Buck with the same sort of issues that were fixed with no problems. Some of them were 20 years old. I'm thinking about sending it to them now just to see what would happen. This bugs me everytime I Ren wax and oil my knives for storage :x
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,

I think the blade rubbing should be covered for sure but you might want to ask them about the handle cracks??? I would try again, what do you have to lose its already messed up a bit ;)

When I called about this knife, 5 or 6 years ago, I talked to a woman that was real short and sweet with her answers like she really did't give a rat's ars ::smirk:: I knew right away that I was waisting my time. I heard Queen had been working on their customer service so I posted it here hoping someone knew if they had straightened out their warranty repair dept. They have a long way to go to come up to Case XX and Buck U.S.A. for warranty work. They are a pleasure to deal with. Let's see if I get some positive replies ::shrug::

I want to add that at the time I thought I'd start to collect Schatt and Morgan and Queen because their product looked great and they were priced well under CASE XX. I was on a roll and bought about 10 knives in a six week period. I've posted a few of them here this week. After I dealt with the repair girl I quit buying their knives. I wasn't mad I just had a bad taste in my mouth from the whole deal. Since then I have kept myself busy with other USA made knives and forgot all about them. I still believe they make a great knife but customer service means allot to me. I was hoping someone from AAPK new they had cleaned up their repair dept. I also heard they were being sold?

I just sent an e-mail to Schatt and Morgan to see if they will repair or replace my knife. Their posted warranty implies it covers everything. I'll let you all know how it ends up.

The warranty says "failure due to defects in materials or workmanship". It does not say "defects due to materials or workmanship except for pin cracks".

Exactly!. My timing might be bad though because it looks like the ownership has changed. I still think it's worth a shot. I checked with one of the knife mechanics in this forum to see how much he would charge to rehandle it. I won't mention his name but he wanted 150% more than I paid for it ::dang:: Then it would still have the blade knock problem.

That's why I gave up on one of the other preferred, premium knife company's. When you pay a premium price you should get a premium product. If they were running thousands upon thousands of knives out the door daily, you could understand one missing an inspection. But these and the "other" one are usually less than a hundred knives total. No excuse!!

Mike -- I've dealt with the public on warranty issues so I understand what you're saying. "I laid my phone on the trunk of my car and forgot it. It fell off and I backed over it. What do you mean you won't cover that under warranty?" True story, almost verbatim.

On the other end of the stick, maybe it would be in the best interest of everyone for the manufacturer to include a disclaimer with all knives having exotic handle materials or those with known issues such as horn or Celluloid. Many sellers already do it. Sellers will put disclaimers in their descriptions, "The handles on this knife are a natural material and have flaws nature put there so should not be construed as a manufacturing defect." You see it all the time on leather goods, why not knives? Folks are not stupid. If you tell them up front, "Look, the horn handles on this knife are beautiful but horn has known issues and here's what they are. We have no control over these issues and will not cover perceived damage to the knife related to these issues." Will that make buyers stop buying horn? Probably not. It's pretty common knowledge that Celluloid out-gasses and people still buy knives with Celluloid handles.

There are however other issues. Take one of my favorite patterns for example, the Camillus 72 and it's clones. It's not uncommon for the handles on them, be it bone or Delrin, to crack at the rocker pin because it's too close to the edge and the material is very thin there. It's a design flaw. In my estimation, it's the responsibility of the manufacturer to repair the knife when the handle cracks or redesign the knife so it doesn't do that.

More opinions by Mr. Opinionated.

Wazu013, I share your frustration with the lack of quality control and customer service on the part of many knife manufacturers, but I'd suggest waiting to send it in. With the change in ownership, there is going to be a lot of confusion; it might be better to wait until things have settled down, and policies are in place. Or at least that has been my experience with dealing with issues with other companies soon after changes of ownership.
Quality should not be an accident. So what is the explanation for some of the knives we've seen in the past few years? (from A Knifebuyer's Manifesto)

I'm giving up on my quest for warranty repair. I think chasing the Daniels family to repair this knife would be wrong. I just wish them the best of luck. I know they will back their product in the future and I can't wait to see what they come up with ::tu::
wazu013
How do you think this knife would look rehandled with Elephant ivory?
I'm assuming they bought Schatt & Morgan as well ::shrug::

Yep I have cracked bone on my 2010 S&M Moose. I bought it to be carried. But I'm blown away by gaps on the backspring. They (yep more than one) run nearly the entire length of the knife.

Like you I'm not going to punish the Daniels family for the sins of the previous owners. But it'll take quite a few sterling reviews from knife nuts to get me back in line to buy a new one.

Now that Sunfish is a beaut, I don't have one like that .....

That's what I plan to do, wait to see how the new product comes out. I bought 10 knives when I was slipped the ringer. I was sold on Queen Schatt & Morgan. I was gearing up for a modest collection of them when I talked to the brutal warranty rep on the phone. I know you can have a bad day now and then but she shouldn't have been allowed to talk to customers. Come to find out the company was ready to take a dive.
If you like the ebony Baby Sunfish check out the MOP Baby Sunfish I bought at the same time.
