Something to watch out for

Post by muskrat man »

I suppose you see alot of oddities when you work on so many knives. Whilst rebuilding queen #83 cokebottle folding hunter today I quickly noticed upon disassembly that the mark side bolster holes (the butt and pivot holes) were considerably smaller than the pile side holes. Maybe done on purpose for use with a tapered pin, or maybe a screw up. I did note the pin was flanged out a great deal on the pile side while the mark side end of the pin was not flanged at all. The pile is exactly 3/32" the mark is right about 5/64". Just thought I'd show ya'll.

were the pins you removed tapered or just flared from peening them?

MM,
Is the hole through the blade & backspring tapered too? If so I would make a new tapered pin on my disc sander.

If the holes are not tapered, the easiest thing to do would be to drill out the smaller hole.

I am really curious now if the holes in the blade & backspring are tapered.
Please let us know.

well, a bit more work on it today confirmed that the pins are/were tapered. The holes in the pivot, butt and rocker areas of the spring and blade are tapered. the pile holes are 3/32 the mark holes are 5/64 the spring and blade are midway. I learnt something new in knife construction today gotta love that ::tu::

It is always a good when you learn something new about making/repairing knives.
Except, sometime what you learn is a pain in the butt!!

Hey! All you knife repairmen(and Ladies, if there are any)!
What sort of vise or vises do you use in your work? Here's a picture of the old post, or leg vise that I use. Seems to work well for me. Also, what size and type of hammers do you recommend? Pictures would be great if you have time. Hope your shop is cleaner than mine.Thank you.

I have lots of vices.... I mean vises.
I have a variety of jaws I have made or bought for my vises, brass, soft rubber, hard rubber & Micarta, as well as the standard steel jaws.

I have lots of hammers too, but I didn't bother to show claw hammers etc.

My shop usually stays fairly clean. I have a 7 year old granddaughter who loves to clean it for me...............this usually leaves grandpa a buck or two poorer.

I figured I might as well show my shop while I am at it. I am really happy with my new (to me) 14" Delta band saw, made in the USA! ::tu::
How about it guys..........Show us your shop!

Sorry MM, I didn't mean to hijack your thread,

Dale

Shop...

Post by CCBill »

Hi ya'll...
Dale, thanks for taking the time to show us your shop. Looks like a great set-up and from what I have heard and seen, you use it VERY well.
I am in the process of re-doing my shop. It is a 20'x20', but as of now, there is very little usable work space. A few years back, we did some remodeling and moved a lot of "stuff" out there. About the time I was ready to deal with it, I had a minor setback, in the form of open heart surgery and a stroke. I'm a lot better now(thanks to the grace of God and a loving Wife), but I still get around fairly slow, so my progress is limited.
If anybody wants to come over and help me organize it, just let me know and I will provide directions to get here  . We will also provide you with some good ole', down home, country cookin'(chicken-fried steak, fried okra, mashed potatos& saw-mill gravy, black-eyed peas, etc.).
I think that all of us can learn something by looking at each others work areas.
I, personally, appreciate all of the effort that has gone into the knife repair section. It is refreshing to see some REALLY talented knife people share their vast knowledge, unselfishly(is that a word, Ken?).
Where else on the web can you find the diversity that is AAPK?
My thanks to ALL of you...Mild(not wild)CCBill... 8)

Boy Bill,
You had me there with the home cookin'.........................until the fried okra. Bleeck! ::disgust::
Then I suppose you would try & feed me grits for breakfast! I don't like Cream of Wheat, let alone the super lumpy version (grits)!

I HAVE BEEN POISONED IN TEXAS!
Just kidding Bill!

My mother used to cook okra once every year or 3 & made us kids take at least one bite. I don't think the chickens would even eat it!
My Mom is the world's greatest wood stove cook, if she can't make okra edible, I'm sure it is impossible.

Seriously, if it wasn't a weeks drive to get there, & I you promise no okra, I would love to help.

Take care,
Dale

There is one way you might get me to try grits:
Fry it in bacon grease and smother it with venison gravy, lots of venison gravy.

I would eat darn near anything fried in bacon grease and smothered in venison gravy....................................... except okra!

Okra...

Post by CCBill »

Thanks for the backup, Johnnie F.
As a True Southener, raised by True Southern parents, I learned to appreciate everyting that came from our garden. Most Northeners have only tried to eat BOILED okra. I like it boiled, fried, pickled, or if you come up with another way, I will try it and odds are, I'll like it.
One of my favorite meals is a plate of fried okra covered with black-eyed peas, with a generous porton of sliced onion and some fresh tomato. A big glass of iced tea and I'm good to go.
Fried okra is also good to snack on, like popcorn.
Ya'll up North, need a Waffle House. They make grits that most amyone would like.
Lotsa good eatin' down South as I am sure there is up North. Just depends on how and where you were raised.
...CCBill...

Now! Let's see some pictures of those work areas and tools. From what I have seen on here, I'm ashamed to show any of my work. I made several knives, a lot of years ago, but they are all gone. I need to go down to the ::paranoid:: "dungeon" and look around. No telling what I might find.

MM. I, too, am sorry for hi-jacking your thread. Next time, I'll start a new one.

Hey all...

....I think that a sticky showing only "shop photos" would be a great idea. It's always interesting to see how others arrange things.

Dale and CCBill, maybe you could start the topic?

I'll post some photos of my mess this weekend some time.

Cheers,
Jaye

Good idea. I should/will when I find my wandering camera take a few of my shop, though it consists of the front half of a 2 car garage, about 20 x 15. I could easily use twice that. I keep sheath making materials in my office. For now, I have relocated my shop over at my mother in laws. I did that because she has lung cancer but may live another 4 years, they don't know. She lives on 3 acres and needs help keeping the place up. So, I have done what I can in a small space, be interesting to see what others have done such as I've seen here.

OK Guys,
I will start a thread in Knife Repair & Restoration.
But instead of just pics of shops, lets also post pics of anything we come across/invent that might be helpful to other Knife Mechanics.

Maybe we could call it, Shops & Shop Tips

How does that sound? Give me some feedback & if the consensus is for it, I will put in on this evening, (or someone else can).
But now, I have to log some serious shop time.
