What do I have?

Post by TAB2you »

Men,

Been looking at many threads on AAPK and you guys can ID knives like nobody's business!

So I bring to the group one that is a mystery to me, as I am a novice at this knife identifying and collecting thing! ::nod::

What I know: Craftsman branded barloe knife, clip blade and pen blade, tang stang reads craftsman usa 9540 on the clip blade. Pen blade shows nothing. Appears to be carbon steel, judging by the look of the patina  . It has been in my tool box for years, sharpening lumber pencils and red crayon for marking. Bolster says Old crafty on it.

No doubt its not a treasure, I can't even tell you where it came from, but it stays sharp and I've used it for proably 15 years in that box.

And now the pic...

Thanks for any help!

Probably Schrade but might be a Camillus.

Made for Sears most likely by Camillus . As good an every day user as you will ever need . They're not expensive --- I currently have one for sale for $25 and it's condition is a little better than yours . I will add a pic shortly . Probably made in the 60's or 70's .

Schrade. Not in the Kastor brand list.

I appreciate it fellas. I don't have any camillus blades, but have some older Schrade blades. They're good workhorses, as this one has been.

Any guesses to the handle material? ::shrug::

She'll go back into the tool box for another 15 years I reckon. ::tu::

Appreciate the info.

Jerry is correct -- I did my research after I made my assumption , and the preponderance of the evidence upholds the Schrade theory . ::facepalm::

Saw cut Delrin.

Camillus made a lot of stuff of Sears before WWII mainly because Sears liked their salesman Albert Baer.
When Albert left Camillus and bought Ulster in 1941, Sears stopped buying a lot from Camillus.
In 1946 Albert Baer bought Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden (then to Schrade in 1971). Camillus got really miffed because Sears switched most all of their knife business to Schrade.
In 1963 Albert Baer bought the remaining outstanding Camillus stock and was the sole owner of Camillus. After Albert bought out Camillus, Sears began to buy more knives from Camillus, though Schrade still made most of them for several years after that. Slowly Camillus began to produce more knives for Sears.

I am reasonably certain Schrade made the Old Crafty series of knives. It was a spin off Schrade’s Old Timer series.
