Knife Storage

Post by gmusic »

Hi all,

Many discussions have been put forth on knife cleaning and storage. Well, today I ran into a new issue (new to me) that I thought I would share. This may have been addressed already, but rather than search the site, I’ll just throw this out there.

I just last year purchased a few display cases to store some of my knives in (got tired of the box and knife roll thing.) I really enjoy seeing my knives out in these cases. I right away went to the fabric store to get some great looking material to go in those displays, with no thought as to the chemical content in that material. Today as I’m doing my check and clean routine, I notice some unsightly “tracks” on some of the bolsters. Well, good thing I use a great wax on those knives, or I may have been in trouble.
So, the search was on for an organic material that would have no adverse effect on the knives. Here’s what I found:

Storage in boxes: If you don’t have the original tissue paper the knife came with, you’ll want acid-free paper to help prevent corrosion.

I hope this is helpful……………gary

I use felt also and have never had a problem. I store my knives in a cabinet with felt lined drawers. My only problem I seem to have is where to store my celluloid knives since I store them seperately.

Hey thanks guys. I see a lot of display cases come with felt or a velour type material, makes since!

I don’t guess the dyes in the felt are harmful? The felt I see in displays is always dyed.

Ok, time to make new beds for the kids……………..

Thanks again!
