Re: The Robeson Cutlery Company
JKB, I wasn't aware of that. I don't know where Dewey got that info. He might or might not have been correct.
The 1st digit in the pattern number describes handle material, the 2nd describes the number of blades and/or implements and the 3rd digit describes the bolster and liner materials.
The last three digits are the handle-die shape number.
Tom Kalcevic in Knives Can Talk, states the "8" in the third position denotes "Steel Frame Liner and Bolster".
On my website, I say that the "8" denotes "Integral Nickle-Silver Liners and Bolsters"
That's not accurate either, as most of these type knives, that I have seen, have nickel-silver liners and bolsters.
Both the liners and the bolsters have slanted edges that hug the handle slabs.
They look like this when viewed in profile: /_____ \
I know that's not a very good representation, but it's all I'm capable of at the moment.
JKB, do you think your knife has steel or NS liners and bolsters?
Here's my best example of this type knife and a four blade congress that I do not own, but saved the pic from an Ebay auction some time ago.

The knife I found in my book with the 128105 number says Lifelong ebonized handle, Nickle silver lining. Mine has nickle silver bolsters and liners, steel back springs and a brass divider between the springs. Could not find my 12837 in the book. Is this patent in the 192o's?

Re: The Robeson Cutlery Company
I don't recall the patent date.
The number on your knife is actually 128037. It's the same handle-die shape as the big cigar Stockman just posted. It just has different construction materials and nomenclature.
Stockman, those are all very nice.

While researching yesterday I happened upon a newspaper ad from Robeson. Wanted young men to learn the cutlery trade, apply in person Perry NY, also girls to clean knives. Dated 1911

Re: The Robeson Cutlery Company
Looks like an 064 pattern pen knife. Probably has a pattern number of something like 622064.
Tom Kalcevic in Knives Can Talk dates that stamp on a master blade to about 1917 - 1939.
The handles are pressure molded black composition. Some folks call this, "Black Bone", but it isn't. At least it's black.
Nice little Robeson.

Re: The Robeson Cutlery Company
Nice pick-up Gino.
Do the blades open and close smoothly or are there three or more stops or catches between fully closed and fully open?
The bronze bearings are known to fall off the ends of the blades, leaving several little "V" cuts or dove-tails to catch on the edge of the backspring.

Re: The Robeson Cutlery Company
The black composition Carpenter's knives are nice.
The bone handled dog leg jack is unusual and a very nice piece.
I have many Robeson knives that do not have a stamped pattern number, so that's not a problem.
Robeson had several dog leg patterns. The 482 Trapper was 4 1/2" long. The 089 was 3 3/4" long. The 424 was 3 1/2" long. The 414 was 3 1/4" long.
Just venturing an educated guess, I'd call your knife a 622424 dog leg jack.
Nice bone on both sides, but I really like the back side handle.

Re: The Robeson Cutlery Company
Scott that knife would be a great candidate for customizing into a single blade. It's got great bone handles.
Sumpin to consider anyhow.
I had an old Ulster in similar condition that Orvet breathed new life into by removing the broken blade and its spring.
Sumpin to consider anyhow.
