Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
Someone's collection like presidents of companies or they were gifts and the person getting the knife cherished it and would not use it. My guesses anyway.
Thanks for the pun David, but we are not even yet!!!
Question, What would you ratehr have a Mint new knife or and older used knife?

75% collect 25% accumulate. I try to stay focused, but there are always those ones that are just too hard to pass up.

For me it's SS. They seem to clean up nice and I use mine to cut up fruit or other foods. Most of my EDCs are older knives and some tend to be pitted or have dark patina. I guess I have some issues with germs and such.
Question #1: If you came across a knife that you felt like you could not pass up, how much money would you be willing to spend to claim it as your own?
Question#2: If society/economics came to a halt and crumbled, do you think as in days past that knives would again become an important part of trade or for use in bartering other goods? If so, how do you think your collection/accumulation would do to provide for you and yours?

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
When I was younger, I came across a knife I thought I couldn't pass up. I was out with my family during xmas vacation. (2younger bros, sis, mom and dad) We went to a super K-mart after going to the movies together. A nice night. The knife was a cheap gimmiky thing that I can't even remember the name of. I stole the knife. Upon leaving the store I was stopped by an employee and taken by the arm to a room in the back of the store. Past my dad, past my sister, past my two younger brothers, and past my mother. It is not a nite I'll ever forget and from that day on, whenever I've come across something I REALLY want, or have to have, I stop and think a bit longer about how bad I really need it.ROCKY1122 wrote:For me it's SS. Q2. If society suddenly came to a halt I can only hope that personal cutlery will reclaim its rightful place on the hips and pockets of all men and boys, to be used in all aspects of day to day life, and to be once again respected and appreciated as the wonderful tools that they are.
Question-What is it about pocket knives in perticular that really gets you? (i.e. history, makers, they're cool cause they fold etc.)

Here it is.

I love the bone on this knife and it holds my warmth a lot like stag. It has kept me busy on many a quiet morning in the fields.
Great knife.
Question: what was the most favorite knife you had, that you lost?

I have a young friend who wants to be a collector, but is stressed for coins. I take a different knife each Sunday for him to fondle and enjoy. He returns it of course at the end of the meeting and we are both better off for the interaction!

Reply to JTS.
I've only lost 2 knives that I can recall, both Vic SAK Classics. Tore me up when I discovered I lost each one, both times.
Oh, it's certainly not an expensive knife but it is one knife I absolutely MUST have on me.....MUST!

A. Yes I have. I remember when I bought (5) I said this could get expensive. At one time about 350 knives. I've now managed to slim down to just over 100 vintage knives and about 75 others. Now its 1 in 1 out
Q. As astute as we all think we are with our knives. Have you ever wondered how many, and which ones you own that may have been repaired, altered, and or fake "Without you knowing which ones they may be?

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
Answer: I really don't have to wonder about this as a problem. I am a user at heart and I only buy new knives, if I see an old knife at a good price, it has to really speak to me before I'll think about bringing it home. The old knives I do have are gifts from friends and at that point, it doesn't really matter what has happened to them.

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
My best knife memory: I have told this story before, but don't mind telling it again! For my 15th birthday (NOV 1970), my Grandma Baker allowed me to go to the hardware store downtown and pick out whatever I wanted up to $15 dollars, one dollar in honor of each of my 15 years. I picked out this Buck 301, which was really 50 cents over budget, she graciously allowed the increase. I took it to the jewelery store she worked at to show it to her - she had the jeweler engrave my initials on the bolster. I own and treasure that knife to this day.

Probably my dad and uncles. It's hard to remember because I got my first pocket knife when I was five. I used to say six but the more I thought about it, it was the summer before I started school and I didn't turn six until August. By the time I started school I had six pocket knives and wish I still had them.

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
I handed my oldest son my Buck 112 to field dress his first deer. He was 12. When he tried to give it back, I told him, "if you're old enough to hunt it and gut it out, you're old enough to have that knife". It was a pretty darn good day for both of us.
I've pretty much given all my kids and grandkids their first knives. I'd say it's become tradition. I've even given a few of their friends their first knives, but nowdays I get written permission from their guardians.
Question: If given a choice, would you prefer a hollow, flat or convex grind on your EDC knife? (or knives)

For a slipjoint I perfer either a flat grind or a convex grind. The hollow grind gets very sharp but I'm always afraid I'm going to chip the blade if I use it too heavily. For a fixed blade I'll go with the convex grind like is on my Bravo 1. It makes for a exceptionally stout blade edge that holds up well under heavy use.
Next question: What's the absolute dumbest thing you've ever done with a knife? Come on now, you can tell us....

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
As a young kid I was very curious. One day I was really interested in seeing the little ball on the inside of a golf ball. You got it! I began sawing away on it with my knife in my right hand and the golf ball in my left. Like every good father ,my Dad said to me,"son ya better be careful before you cut yourself with that knife".
A few min. later I sliced my thumb wide open. I mean the kinda of cut that went deep down, where things changed color and ya saw stuff you weren't supposed to see.The kind of laceration that made me "curious" to look at, deep down inside!. I dont know if was in shock but I didn't feel much when I was prybar opening my wound to get a good look at it and marvel at how cool I looked on the inside. Then it hit me like a big black sedan, and I began to catterwall like a cat with it's tail caught under a rocker! Yep... Dad being the father he was said,"told ya so!" Thanks Dad.
Mom took me to the doctors...Dad went about his business. I carry the faint sign of that scar to this day but I've mentally blocked out the the make of the knife I was usin'.

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
Great stories guys, let's get this one out and running again.
My Dad carried (and still carries) a Schrade 8OT stockman that I gave him when I worked my first job away from the farm. Unfortunately he lost the original knife I bought for him for Christmas when I was working at Herman's World of Sporting Goods in Springfield, VA. Well, a few years later we were baling hay and one of his buds found the knife in one of our hay fields. It was rusted beyond use though.
So when I first started collecting knives back in 2008 I found a nice, used USA made 8OT that he carries every day now. I also picked up a back-up one and a NIB one that's made overseas. I told him if he lost another knife I was going to paint the Chinese one blaze orange and give it to him. So far he's been able to hang on to this one and it cuts everything from cow hair to apples, sometimes he even wipes it off before going from one to the other!
My question is, what do your friends and family think about your fondness of knife collecting?

Re: Give this thread a try and see where it goes
For me, it is the relative ease of collecting. There are so many different knives out there, and in many cases, alot of them were produced. And depending on what brand you collect, there can be bargains out there. Plus, I just like knives...
My question - (may have been already asked) What knife , which may be the cheapest POS out there, will you not get rid of, cause it has some special meaning to you? And how or who did you get it?
Glenn
