Post by leepost »

Before anyone gets excited, I know this sight is about pocket knives!! But I have a old cigar cutter with a stanhope viewer and pearl handles from early 1900s told it was in the busch beer family, trying to find a collector or some info on it ,looks like wester & butz maker Thanks

So far, according to Goins.... Wester Bros of NY (1904-1967) were the sole importers of Wester & Butz products from Solingen Germany. :) s-k

Cool! ::tu::
Most of the "V" cutters I have seen from the last 50+ years have the "V" cutter positioned so that you put the end of the cutter on the end of the cigar. This is the first one I have seen that cuts perpendicular to the cigar. It is also the first one I have seen with a Stanhope viewer in it.

Very nice find. As far as the forum goes, it is a cutter that fits in the pocket, hence I don't find it a great stretch to put it here. It is pocket cutlery.

that's a neat old tool. is it a wester & butz or naugatuck? i'm confused. is there any advertising on it? most of the a-b stanhopes i've seen are embellished.

HI!

The Stanhope lens will make it more valuable than if not adorned with it. It would easily add another $100 to $200 to the price alone. Interesting that this non-knife related items is so collectable. Nice knife

Hello Leepost,

That is really a jewel of a piece, I agree that the stanhope really sets it apart in functionality and value.. ::tu::

I finally got time to scan my favorite cigar cutter, an Al Mar Executive.
IIRC, the blade is ATS-34. The lighter that slips in the case is a Mini Bic. I used this for years as one of my EDCs. The blade is so sharp that you can make a clean "V" cut or cut the entire end off of the wrapper leaf of the cigar, my personal favorite way to cut a good cigar.

IMO, the "V" concentrates the smoke through a smaller area and tends to get bitter, especially with stronger cigars. Also most guillotine style "V" cutters are not sharp enough to cut cleanly without mashing the head of the cigar, often tearing the fine wrapper.

One of the advantages of managing 3 smoke shops (one was about 3/4 cutlery & all sold knives) was that I got hundreds of excellent salesman's sample cigars each year.
Ah, the good old days! :mrgreen:
