Filled or fooled?????

Need to know what is meant by " Gold filled ".
See this quite often, mostly on the " GENTLEMAN " type knives.
Can anyone explain what this means.

In old watches it basically meant a layer of "solid" gold, versus gold plated.
Like Chet said, much higher gold content than just plated.
