A prototype is a one of a kind made knife usually designed as an example or trial run of a certain model knife that the company is about to produce. Because they are so rare and one of a kind the price on these knives are usually very high..

Here are two I am lucky enough to have in my posession..

I would have to say that yes most are marked on the blades with the word prototype either in etching are engraving. But there are some prototypes that are not marked and may have some form of identification papers that certify they are indeed prototypes..

Since most of these knives are collectables, be careful of the source when purchasing a prototype because proving it at a later time may be almost impossible. Make sure the seller is reputable and the paperwork is genuine.

You see hundreds on Ebay, when actually, very few were made! Sunburst's are genuine, and he and I can prove it, but it's much harder in other "cases" !!

Dead Easy is exactly correct and anyone can do it. I thought about posting how, but then thought better of it. Someone just running into the site, I don't want to be giving them any ideas. There is far to much counterfeiting going on. Now, to find an easy way to detect it, that would just what we need.
