What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

That stuff is so hard to shoot. I shoot almost always outside and struggle with MOP even more than MOTS.

81043 with 8 OT for comparison. Probable date of mfg. 1938 to 1942.

I do have a couple Ulster Barlows with a similar nice swedge grind. I also have what I believe to be a later Kingston (brand etched on the blade not stamped) with a beautiful swedge grind. The 1961 Ulster catalog shows three Ulster stockman patterns, #45, #45 UK & #47, all 3-1/2 inches with nice swedge ground clip blades. It's quite possible, IMHO, that Ulster made the blade for that knife.

However for me, after about 1950 it is really difficult to tell if a knife was made by Kingston, Ulster or Schrade, (just my opinion). By 1958 Schrade and Ulster were consolidated and moved to the Ellenville factory from Walden. At that point I think it can be argued that the two brands were basically made in the same factory, but I would have to do some checking, probably with LT, to be sure that is correct. I have a hard time thinking that two brands owned by the same company would have two separate blade making facilities in the same plant, but it is possible I suppose.

I have taken apart Ulster knives made with the Swinden key system. As we know Schrade was the only company that had the Swinden machinery to produce knives like that. In my mind at least there is little difference between the later Ulsters and the Schrades. I think they were all made on the same machinery by the same people. ::shrug::

Here is a boxa old serpentine stockperson and moocow equal enders. From maybe 1920s to 1973. No Delrin here. Coupla Wondawoods, but the rest are bone. Schrade wasn't really big on antler. If the big volcano in Yellowstone starts to grow, this little suitcase is the one I will grab on the way out of town. On my way east, I will have to stop in Kansas and raid Hal's place for a couple I need.

Here is another eclectic mix of Schradery. There are a couple in there with crescent pre-WWI (not to be confused with Larry's WW11, whenever that was) tang stamps, and some Hermans. If the volcano blows, and there is room for these tucked in with the wife and dog, I will take these also.
