tendots, I would suggest moving from Opinels to Buck Bucklite's which can regularly be found for under $20. That way, you could buy a bunch of them and then keep them in rotation with Buck's insane warranty program.

But, on second thought, I really like Buck and want to see the company survive and, well.... tractors and all...

gino, I just LOVE the spear on that GEC 85 - that sure is one very good looking knife!

tendot, hope it was clear that I was just having some fun about the hard treatment you put your knives through. I'm very much comforted at the thought of some knives being used as tools, even if that means lost in the field or run over by the tractor. In no way pushing Bucks over Opinel. But, now I'm curious why you would never own one. That's an interesting position to arrive at. There are some knives I don't care to own too.

smokepole, let's hope that GEC gets around to putting Gino's #85 into production. I think the spear/cap lifter blade combination is just stellar. Would love to see that blade combination done as a Canoe too. When I carry my old Ulster camper, the cap lifter is by far the most frequently used blade other than the spear point (although, not often for turning screws - ahem). It comes in pints?!

Buck 500 in RFP today. Opinel #9 is tucked in the PDA case with the Squirt, cause I can't leave home without it.

 Dave (Pinnah) I like my spears too - and with a caplifter - in my case it is a Camillus Boy Scout - one of the later ones with the five blades, including a star/phillips screw driver. With the knife making I do quite a bit of leather work too and the awl on the Scout is fantastic.

The other one is a hell of a lot of knife for the money - EKA Swede in 12c27. Just love it. Added the Kwik-Thumb stud to turn it into a one hand opener and it is great!

Tendots, that's the right blade combination. Wow, interesting knife and not one I've ever seen before.

The spear point on that knife reminds of the spear points used on the larger Victorinox knives like the Trekker. I've had US made Ulster camper knives ever since I was 8 and like Smokepole's Camillus, the spear points have more "belly" to them out towards the tip. I would really love to see an equal end frame (like Smokepole's scout) with just the spear point blade and cap lifter combo like on that German knife. I think that would be an ideal blade combination. Thanks for posting that link!

Smokepole, where did lanyard bail go on your Camillus and how did you clean it up? Here's my de-bail-ified Ulster, which is in my RFP. Opinel #9 rides as back up in the PDA case.

Dave, I got the knife as is - I don't think it ever had a bail and it was in the condition you see it in - it was definitely one of the late models - at the stage where they did not finish the back of the knife and the springs off fully - I'll post a pic a little later.
I also like the spear with a bit more belly. Spear+caplifter in an equal end Jack....like the #85? Now you have me thinking....

Smoke,

Sort of like Gino's (non-production) #85 but different.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a #68, with the small pen blade being replaced with a cap lifter.

Think about combining the blade combination of this knife that Tendots gave us a link to with the equal end frame (and bigger belly) like on the GEC #68. Actually, having not seen a #68 in person, I wonder if the spear has the belly that I like. I do like the shape on Ginos #85. Would prefer to have a thinner carry though and would prefer the cap lifter to be on the other end, like the one that Tendot pointed us to. A Canoe pattern would another nice platform for that blade combo.

In any event, mush these together...

OK, I get the idea. Started on something earlier this afternoon - but blades same end. I must admit, I like that configuration, like on the #85, or actually a smaller Camillus #23 with the caplifter in place of the pen blade - I guess in the end I'll end up making one of each! ::tu::

Pinnah/smokepole,would't it be possible to remove the awl and the canopener on that Ulster. If you would replace those ugly scales with some nice bone or stag, you have your own dreamknife.

I've been carrying this for a while. It's a Camillus WWII - Army Post Exchange Resale Knife with the Lanyard Scott (TripleF) gave me.

pinnah - I like the German knife with the cap lifter. Where did you find that? Are they for sale online?

Tendot, the Ulsters used the Swinden Key type of assembly. I'm not sure there are many knife mechanics who are set up for repairing them or reblading them. I just don't know. I could be wrong on that.

Jerry, Tendot posted an ebay link above to that German knife. I don't speak Dutch so I can't tell who the manufacturer is. Cool looking knife (though my heart still lays with the equal end pattern). I dig that Camillus easy open!!

Not much to show yet Dave - just the profiles for the springs and blades and some rough profiles for the liners. I'll try and upload some pics a little later - my Internet is troublesome again tonight. But I think we maybe then need to move it to a thread of it's own - to avoid a very serious hi-jack here.... :D

Tendots, I am sure it would be possible, definitely on the Camillus, but for me I like the full Scout pattern as part of my "working" knife assortment - I often use the awl on my knife, as well as the can opener. The one I am thinking of here would be more of a "step out" (Sunday go to meeting?) type of knife - maybe a little smaller, and something handy to put in your pocket going to town, but not to work.

Jerry, that is bad!!! Seriously bad. Great knife - basically the grand dad of the #85 with a bail thrown in. Man, that is a nice knife!! Ever you want to trade..... ::sneaky:: :D
