When they have extra components left over from a past run, they can either put it to use or throw it in the trash. Personally I think the "clean up" runs are a great twist. I guarantee they don't buy components to make short runs - that doesn't make sense for anybody.

And, on another note, the intent in the post about "Egg Hunt" was not pertaining to finding a knife you are looking for - it was for spotting the short runs. Just one of the advantages of staying on top of things. If you are looking for something in particular, whether already released or coming up, there are several solutions to that problem - some already mentioned.

GEC makes so many knives do you guys think that whether or not its a special run or a regular produced knife they will be worth what you paid for it. I collect what I like its confusing!

Hard to say really Jeffrey, I would say give it 20 years and who knows, might be able to get another 50 bucks out of them. ::shrug:: Obviously the lower runs would bring more I think.

I don't have a problem with GEC making short runs. It's something like Case doing the first production run thing, and much better organized than the Case Classic prototypes, salesman samples, and one of ?'s. It's all about selling knives to them. I did like GEC better when their knives were a little more affordable though. Their prices seem to have moved up from the $70 -$90 area to $100+ and more kinda rapidly with the quality of the knives still being the same IMHO. I'm not knocking GEC because really they do make good knives.

Pretty sure about the same amount of labor goes into any GEC, wether its a small knife or a large one.
The cost of the materials for a Conductor and a Lumberjack only differ by a few dollars. It may take a little
less time to grind/finish a #33 than a #45.....but they each have to go to every station on the production floor.
I do agree that the prices have gone up even in the short time I have been collecting them, but if you
figure it by the pound....the LumberJacks were almost FREE!!!..........
The 4" and over knives are some of the best knife values out there from any knife company imo.

As far as the short runs.....I don't think it will matter in a few years if your knife is 1 of 7 OR 1 of 35-50.
All of GEC's knives are short runs as far as I can tell. In 20 years a 1 of 35 wil be almost as hard to find/rare.
It will come down to handle material, knife size and pattern desirability.

Its only logical to assume that small runs are going to increase in value & desirability ......no matter what pattern or scale material. ::nod::
Case in point....the 2006 open house pastel acrylic knives...IMO,they were not desirable at all...maybe to my Wife..but not me.
How much are they worth now?.......the last one I saw ..the seller was asking $400. :o ..I wasn't at the open house but I guarantee they were not priced no where's near $400.

I know some of you are going to say "those were special.. OPEN HOUSE knives"...and I do agree....but hopefully you will still be able to get the gist of what I'm trying to say. :|

I'm not trying to offend anyone....this is just my opinion. ::tu::

I agree with JR____the short runs___ (less than 10 ) and the open house knives, with hold and increase in value, better than a run of 35 / 50__as most GEC normal production runs**___there are the favorite handle materials, that also hold & gain value, also ( stag, ivory, elk )__but seems the handle materials, don't matter so much,on the less desired model knives ???____ just my opinion ( I'm Bias ::paranoid:: )___the ""STAG"" will always be "'KING"" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::ds:: ____and the bigger knives, hold value better, than the small knives (all brands)____JMHO***
I'm not young enough,____to know everything !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is bigger than I usually like, but once again I have been overcome by the allure of primitive bone, so I traded for it.

The Northfield 65 Ben Hogan arrived in today's mail. I was delighted to discover that it was made on what would have been my grandfather's 99th birthday. He is responsible for creating my love of pocket knives.

Great #65 Doug!!

I WAS gonna hold out for the #48s but just had to get this one. I wish GEC made more in the smooth 2nd cut stag rather than jigging it. #23 of 24 made in 2008.
