72 73 lockblade questions ?

i was wandering is it the 72 lock back or the 73 Liner lock that had been known to have a slight blade wobble ocasenily ? iam guessing the 73 Liner lock is usaly more solid ? thanks......

ok thanks, iam thinking on getting one that locks, does the 73 liner lock still have good opening, closing snap, or is it reduced a little since it locks ? iam assuming it isnt the nail braker the old ones were ?

Hey CB, the ones I have seen and have had all had a great snap too them, no different than the trappers really.
The #72s usually get play in them a lot fast after hard use VS the #73. I carry both quite a bit, but I like my #73L best.

yea i think ill go with a 73L probaly, Johnny, has your 73L stayed tight so far ? is it a little easier to open than the older 73,s ? the first yellow rose i had was tearing up my thumbnail, LOL

i ca'nt remember the last 73 liner lock but i think it was a tractor green. at least i beleive that was the latest i added to my collection, however the opening was still pretty stiff. when it comes to locks i believe the liner slip is inherently stronger.--HiPower

i also like the idea of the locking 72 mini hunter a bit too,

if one were loose, could GEC actualy tighten it up, and it would stay tight ?? i had always heard that peening, or tightening was only temporary ??

CB, my #73L has been tight since I got it, the backspring broke and has been replaced and the knife is still tight. I've been using it a lot so I'm really happy that it has stayed nice and tight.

GEC can definitely tighten the #72 up, I had one that wriggled a lot and I couldn't stand it. GEC took care of it and it has been tight since, it's my food prep knife so it doesn't get abused, but with their history of blade play I don't know that they would sustain from play again.

Hey CB____i'm 61 years young,and have lots of ""authritis" in my fingers___the #72's are a ""blessing"" for me___they open EZ,and lock tight for me__the #73's,will vary spring tension,from knife to knife,but for the most part,have a very strong opening spring,___ I will agree they seem to lock tighter and stay tight,a little longer than the 72's (not enough difference to really tell ????) __I carry the two #72's below,a lot,and love em' !!!!!___after playing with some of the, #23's & #73's,my fingernail is pretty much gone__the 72's get ""EXTRA"" pocket time then

I do carry a #73 Stag,that I dearly love too,but for, ease of opening,the 72's,would be the favorite****good luck,Monk

i agree that the 72 is much easier to open & close & the spear is my carry these days. the liner 73 is for lefties.--HiPower

I traded for this nice little 72 the other day.
Turns out, it has the wiggles.
Called Chris at GEC this morning who cheerfully told me to send it in for repairs ASAP.
The fix may or may not last, but all I have to loose is the flat rate shipping fee so I'm on my way to the post office.

Nice to deal with a company that doesn't duck and dodge and try to point blame at others.

sounds like the 72,s mabe need some renginering at the facory, i really like the idea of them, but seems very few are staying tight ? to me i think it would be the perfect knife to use fishing, and some hunting, of course i wonder just how loose they would get ? if they just barley moved a little and never really flopped around, it might not hurt nothing ?

Well, just had to try one, just got off the phone with Bruce at Docs knifes, i bought a ebnoy wood 72 !

and a lanyard hes making me for it, he asured me its tight, so ill giver her a whirl,

CB, great choice of knife and dealer.
Bruce is a great guy and his business and the quality of knives reflects that.

I think you'll be impressed, the #72 is a beaut. Mine has stayed tight and I've worked it over pretty good, it's definitely nothing to worry about. It's too nice of a pattern to ignore.

A great knife for sure.
Mine wasn't that bad but I figure for the price you pay, and concidering that Buck, Schrade, and numerous others can make a lock back without wobble, I'd let em fix a problem they obviously know exists.
Like I said, "they stepped right up" so Im happy.

Charlie, I try not too look to closely at your knife, there is a verse in the Bible about jealousy and something about it not being good.
That knife is down right purty, I really like it. I was just admiring my #72 and all that we have been through in such a short time, it's great to have a good one.

Congrats, they'll fix you up right.

do you mean as tight as a reguler 73 , rock solid no blade play ? i was wandering if a person should expect a touch in a lock back as per the design ?

o and do the locks get a little eaiser over time ? little snug on pushing the lock, but not to bad

I have an EDC #72 and when I first got it the lock seemed too tight to release. It has improved
maybe a little but the blade locks up tight still. I think there is a give and take there.....too easy to
release and it may not stay tight...

This thread got my attention so I'm gonna toss my 2 cents in.
I got a #73L stag. Was my first GEC and I love it. Hands down a great knife. However, I now own 4 GEC knives (thanks in no small part to our dear Mr. Twoshoes and his inscrupulous advocacy for the brand

) and out of the group, the #73 is the only one that has a hint of blade wobble. I have no experience with the 72's or any other med-lg lockers, so I can't really compare it to those, but the #56, #65, and the...uh..

Caleb whats the pat # for that sweet half congress you gave me for no other reason than your pockets were full? anyway, thay all snap open nice and firm, no play at all!!
The #73 that I have opens reeeal nice and super smooth with a very positive lock, and the little bit of play it has don't bother me much at all, but it's nice to hear you guys say that GEC could probly take care of that for me if it does. ?
