Knives... Worth Anything or Not?

Hey All,

Brand new to this forum and wanted to ask your opinion about a couple knives I bought the other day. I got these two (and an old lockback schrade that's worth about $2.50) for $5.00, so even if they're not worth anything< I'm still happy with my purchase. Thanks!

In answer to your question, no knife is worthless. They all deserve love and a good home.

Well, perhaps worthless is too strong of a word. I agree that no knife is worthless (since I've carried some of the $.50 knives you can buy in any hardware store before), and if these don't have any value, I'm probably going to end up using the "barlow" for leatherwork and carrying the other after my current Frost gives out... Just trying to see if they have any value beyond using them as tools.

They are not worthless , but they are worth - less than your Frost if that gives you a hint .

Davis, welcome to AAPK and thanks for posting pictures of your knives. I think you can get some use out of those knives so they are worth that at least. It's like an old pickup truck, as long as it runs someone can find a way to use it, so it's worth something. I don't think you overpaid for the lot. But the main value is the utility value, they're not really collectible.

Now that you're here, I hope you will stick around and look at some of the threads. Knives can be an interesting field of study. Major stress reliever too. Half the guys here would be batshit crazy if it wasn't for AAPK.

I turned over and over in my memories the times when I only had one knife - - then two - - then three. Each one - a Ka Bar Trapper that had been my Dad's Daddy's pocket knife, a Western 5" blade hunting knife II bought at a little hardware store when I was 16, and an old Barlow - given to me for taking care of an old neighbor man's chickens while he sat by his wife in the hospital. Each had tremendous value to me.

Now with a hundred (?) or more in my collection, and going into my twilight years, some knives have little interest as to $ value but what priceless memories go along with each one. Surely when I am gone off into the sunset, those pos will get put in a box and someone will look at that pile and think "Why are they here instead of the trash can". The ones that have so many years of memories will not mean that much to whom ever ends up with them. Last night I took by treasure box of Case knives out and, strange as it seems, opened each box, unwrapped each one and renewed old friendships with each. Does that make me a knife nut? ? ?.

But, just today I pulled one of the pos out of a tool box tray and scraped the inside of the battery cable and the battery post, so that pos had a value today. Tomorrow it may get sent to the bye bye box. . .

Old Gar, Well stated! I too have special knives that will probably not mean anything to my children and grandchildren but don't think I'm giving up on any of them as potential "knife nuts". Knives are usually on the gift lists for the males at birthday and Christmas. Maybe gifting some of our "special" knives with a historical note attached might enable them to realize why these knives have worth to us, even if they appear to be a piece of junk.

Well, I had my future father-in-law sharpen the "barlow" for me, and I do actually plan on using it for leatherwork, as I mentioned before... He (my fiance's dad) actually makes knives and has for some time, although most of his knives would go in the "primitive" category. You can check out some of his stuff over at Hoy's Forge.

As for me, I'm just a humble leatherworker who happens to like neat-looking knives... Can you blame me?
