Q: Hi. My name is Brad Wood and I wrote the article in Jim Sargent's book on Case fixed blades. I thought you might like to know this is a Case 262 pattern hunting knife. This is not a prototype, but rather is a regular production knife showing up in Case both price lists and catalogs of the era. The catalogs describe the handle material as black hard rubber (both the 1934-35 catalog and the 1939 catalog). The earliest Case factory price list for which I have a copy is January 1, 1931 and the 262 is listed in it. So, it at least dates back that far and probably earlier. It was discontinued sometime before January 1, 1940. I say that as all price lists from 1940 forward do not list a 262 pattern hunting knife. No price lists are known to exist for 1938 or 1939, but I have a copy of an internal inventory Case made of all products they sold in 1938 and it lists that four dozen (48) 262's were sold in 1938. For a grand I would want to see both sides of the blade and the sheath, if that is not too much to ask

Man, that is pristine. Maybe a little too pristine for my taste. Not suggesting there's anything wrong with it though.


edit- Would this knife be comparable to a Remington RH-43?

For my own clarification, was the knife made by Remington or Case ? I see the Case stamping on it but the seller seems determined to make it a Remington.

Maybe somebody can jump in with some obscure historical information that clarifies, but my impression of cutlery in our country over the decades is that trading patterns, production, workers, machines, ad infinitum between companies was very common. I know that in the early years of WESTERN STATES in Boulder, Colorado, they sold KABAR fixed blade knives which they stamped themselves. In more recent times, Imperial, Ulster, Schrade and Camillus produced cutlery with VERY blurred provenance. It is tempting to quote BL: "Read the knife."
