Knife Rests?

Post by bonehead »

Ok here is a question I don't think has been answered ::paranoid::

What is the world are knife rests for? I see these on ebay and in other auctions. Most often made of glass... They command a good price too. Why would anyone need these? They look like glass dog bones to me.

They are for dinner knives. You spread butter on your bread and use the rest to keep the butter off the table or cloth, I guess.

Their origin is from a time when cloth was very expensive and stains nearly impossible to remove. They are from the past and some are made out of things like silver, ivory, gold, leaded crystal, etc. The best ones were made by famous firms for the very rich.

John, I don’t have any myself but if it’s just pictures you’re looking for, the internet is your friend. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=knife+rests+f ... images&ia=. You can find everything from antiques to modern day stuff. I’m just an old country boy - at our house we just prop the knife on the edge of our plate after it’s been used. ::facepalm::

Here’s a metal one .
If you watch any movies like Downton Abbey and that period in time you will see them sitting on the tables at meal time .

I remember a thread here, once upon a time, and some members posted pictures of knife rests they had. But searching the forum using the words "butter table knife rest" and combinations thereof yielded too many hits. Thanks for your replies though. ::handshake::

Here is Cutco''s version of the knife rest. His name is SHERLOCK( thus the hat and pipe) and he came in 2 sizes; small for butter and table knives and large for carving knives.
Could not believe what people were asking for them on e bay! For the price of one, l could have bought a hundred!
