Thanks for the link, Willie. The Nords were definitely a civilization that depended on the knife. Actually I guess they still do. The birch and reindeer antler combination found on most makes for a hardworking but great looking combo.
Re: Nordic Knife link
Here's a link http://www.cultur.nu/knivar/ Its in different Scandinavian languages, but the pictures are great. Click on a knife in the left column and then pick a year and I believe the pictures show what knives sold for then.

Thanks for the links Willie and Bill, I've spent several hours on them and so begins my education. These traditional knives are really something. I really like this guy's site: http://puukkomies.posterous.com/

Are the Helle knives, made in Norway, considered a Puukko?

I don't know the answer to your question, TJ, but I sure like your knife.
Very singular handle. I bet that design evolved for a better grip in the cold wet fisheries of the Great White North. I perused some of the puuko links and the translations from Finnish are a real hoot. I still have no idea what I was reading.

Re: Nordic Knife link
According to this description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puukko I think that's definitely a puukko, TJ.
Re: Nordic Knife link
TR and Tank. Thanks for your response. I was sort of coming to the conclusion that the knives made in Finland were called Puukkos and those made in Norway something else. I'll call it a Puukko.
