Pinnah;nice 500 I think you'll be very happy with that Buck,it's a little more work to get an edge but I find it last just as long as 1095

Maybe I can make that *my* resolution. Only buy 1095 knives this year, unless it's a Buck..
Good idea on the 1095.
Fortunatly New Years isn't here yet so I think I'll revise mine and add 1095 ceveat.

Jim, that #73L is fantastic.
I hope to get one in the new year, they are great knives.
I've had a slew of different knives on me today. Since Christmas I have been testing out a few different patterns, the #65 Ben Hogan has made the biggest impression. So far so good, the extra blade length is appreciated. I have my Templar in a leather sheath and a #56 with it in my FRP.

ForensicJim and MyDogHunts, I can't decide which of your knives I like better. Jim, nice patina!
Garddogg, I have a soft spot for Bucks. Goes way, way back. Did Buck ever do 1095? Regardless, the 500 is fitting in the pocket really, really nicely. Garddogg, if you get the time, I would love to see a follow up in the Wilderness knife thread from you. Would love to hear more about how you spend your time in the Maine woods. Please pray for snow...garddogg56 wrote:Pinnah;nice 500 I think you'll be very happy with that Buck,it's a little more work to get an edge but I find it last just as long as 1095

Pinnah, that forced patina was the result of applying yellow mustard for about an hour and then wiping it off.

Jim, do you like the results better than just straight vinegar?Forensic Jim wrote:Pinnah, that forced patina was the result of applying yellow mustard for about an hour and then wiping it off.

Jerry, I've tried vinegar before and found that yellow mustard gives more of a blue finish.

Re: WHAT ARE YOU CARRYIN RIGHT NOW? WHAT IS YOUR FAV EDC?
I got this one on me right now, it's great.

The powderhorn is a very classic looking pattern and I think it can handle a lot. I definitely appreciate the pen blade, the added thickness feels great in the hand. The #12 will remain a favorite of mine, the frame is so comfortable for my hand, I know some people don't like the rear bolster, but I love it all.

THINGS I USED MY NEW BUCK 500 FOR TODAY:

Opinel & Brooks by Pinnah, on Flickr
- Cut and prepared bagels for breakfast, including spreading butter and ginger marmalade. The wider front belly of the blade is almost as good as a spear point and much better than a clip point for kitchen work (form e).
- Dispatched with several errant zip ties that needed to go.
- Opened hard clam shell retail packaging. Glad to have a stout knife.
- Shaved off the bottom of a sticky porch door after my old plane gave out
- Drive a dozen screws into repair plates. I only use screwdrivers on screws.
- Bike ride. The Opinel is still lighter. Sorry for crappy picture. French Opinel. British Brooks saddle. American Trek handbuilt frame.

I can't seem to put this knife down. I bumped the Rough Rider Tobacco Smooth Bone Barlow for the CHAPMAN HAND FORGED 80 year old knife:

You use knives on Cottontails?
Bettcha I can pull the hide off, and sling the guts out of that bunny before you can get that knife out and opened up.
Course it won't make near as pretty of a picture.

Nice Charlie.
I made one cut and I split the bunny, it was a first time for me so I wasn't prepared for the ease of it all. Next time I'll use my thumb nail.
And for the sake of a knife test, I had to take the open opportunity, if anyone wanted to know, GECs will skin rabbits with ease.

Charlie, remember this is PA and we do just about everything with knives LOL! You were given a knife as a little kid here and you learned to use it and besides it's just more fun that way Its another reason to use your knife as wellMyDogsHunt wrote:You use knives on Cottontails?

I'm carrying this one for the first time. It's my birthday and I thought it would be a good day to break it out.
