I wanted to chime in on this as I think it is important. Yes the buyers do play a major role in the price. Another factor that I am experiencing right now is authors of books. My book that will be late spring "hopefully" entitled "Tidioute a Town With an Edge" will have a price "guide" in it. I based the prices on actual transactions and my experience in buying and selling related Tidioute cutlery items. I was told early on to NOT over inflate just to try an build up a market. Buyers will soon change prices and the guide would be useless. So again, actual accounts and no pie in the sky pricing for this author. Some books are seriously overdone on prices. particularly those that promote less than mainstream brands that the author may have had an interest in $$$. Hope this adds to the discussion.

Writers that do this loose all creditability, at least with me. I remember when I was in the cutlery business in the 1980s, and reading one of Parker's books. The price that he set for his own knives was absurd, considering the poor quality of many of them.

The price books may have had their place in the days before ebay. But with ebay in place, the prices fluctuate so wildly that it is hard to set a solid price. I was looking for a Schrade 44OT and had not seen any for 2 or 3 months on ebay. Then one came on and sold for $150. The next week a used one sold for $80. The following week I bought one on ebay new in box with papers for $55. It must have slid under the radar because most of the ones I see now are going for $100+.

Maybe the one I got was a fluke, but it was properly listed. I think ebay is useful in setting a general price range, but it changes so rapidly that by the time a price list is printed, it is out of date.
