Steller Sea Cow Bone

I am not sure I did the right thing again.

I want to know if I need to stabilize an old bone like you do wood?
To be used as knife scales ?
It's an Extinct Steller Sea Cow Bone....

Check that out in your search engin.

If I just get it carved (to look like a knife) is it best to stabilize after it is carved?

My first idea was to get this carved to look like a knife. Do you see the knife in it?

If it does not have to much honeycomb in side on the blade end. It has some on the rounded end but thats to be the handle.
Pix shows the knife to be up side down.

What & where did this appendage come from on this here water Cow? ....Below are a few photos of stabilized Stellar Sea Cow handles on a 1996 - Case Classic "Prototype" - 1 of 10 run only that now belongs to my good friend, Gary Music!

It to the best that I know it came from Fairbanks Alaska.
I think it is a rib bone.

Is this the info you wanted?

Thats a nice looking scales there. How was it stabilized ?
and when ? befor or after it was made in to scales?

There have been several sea cow deaths here in Florida lately and now all of sudden you are showing us some bone...

This bone of mine

is of an Extinct Steller Sea Cow.

But if you want me to send it your way to place it in you drawers I will.

The bone is soft

and I think it needs to be treated first.
I do not know what to do with it yet. First I need some help on
"OLD BONE"S" .
Fossilized bones I think are hard yes?

soft indicates it was harvested from frozen remains i think. probably will require stabilization. somebody here knows for sure. are the ends saw cut?

one end looks a bit like small bee honey comb.
Not a lot just in the center like bone maro stuff.
