Unknown Camillus Tang Stamp

Post by jerryd6818 »

Does anyone recognize this Camillus tang stamp? Do you know what time span it's from?

Yes, I know it looks much like the '46 - '56 stamp but compare the fonts and spacing.

Thanks Red. It's not on that list. I have pictures of all those plus a few more and this one has subtle differences when compared to the '46-'56 stamp.

Jerry, I believe that is an excessively deep and distorted '46 -'56 stamp.

Looks like there was a problem with the machine or it could have been
a "set-up" part. The stamp basically "bottomed-out," and the letters smudged.

Guess QC let it out the door cuz it's legible and doesn't hamper the
performance of the knife in any way.

Pretty interesting indeed! ::nod::

I am inclined to agree with Joe.
For what ever reason the stamp seems to have sank deeper into the tang; perhaps the blade was still hot or the power on the hammer was cranked up too high.

It may be the two stamps are made by different companies.

I have observed a difference in appearance in some of Schrade’s stampings, even though the stamps used were of the same design, they left a slightly different image. Some stamps are light and crisp, others deep and a bit blurred, still others are deep and crisp. ::shrug::

The explanation may also be as simple as a variation in hydraulic pressure in the stamping machine.

It should be noted that as the stamps wore the image they left on the tang would change slightly from earlier impressions made from the same stamp.

In my mind there are a number of variables that could account for the differences.....
Or they could be a different stamps, but I don't really see two different type styles here or a difference in the info or the way it is arranged.

These are my thoughts on this without having the knives in hand and comparing them side-by-side under high magnification and with precision measuring tools. If I could examine them under those conditions, I might change my mind. ::hmm::

It has to be two different stamps. None of the other explanations given, fit the spacing differences between characters in Camillus, the blockier look of the characters in Camillus, the wider spacing between characters in Camillus, the shorter bottom leg on the 'L' in Camillus and the shorter New York on my knife. Notice on my knife, the N in New starts at the end of the letter 'C' in Camillus instead of being directly under the 'C' in Camillus like on the other stamp. Same, same the relationship of the 'K' in York and the 'S' in Camillus.

Different stamp has to be the explanation. Thanks for the input fellas. It is appreciated.
