I really does look like it could be a salesman's sample, but it's one of those knives that I would have to hold before I would buy it. I've seen (and own) salesman samples that are marked that way. Not to say that automatically makes it one, but it is one possible explaination. It looks genuine Case unless I'm missing something and the blank shield could back-up the sample theory. I would really like to see this knife up close.

Do you know anything about the knife's history?

Neither the spey blade or the punch look like Case blades to me, the bone also doesn't look like Case jigging and coloration. If it's a salesmans sample, maybe it's a contract knife.

I saw those pics a long time ago and gave my opinion to someone about the knife. I agree with MSteele, its authentic but not made by Case - my only guess is a sample made up by Ulster (looks like Ulster tooling to me). Ulster did make several patterns of pocket knives on contract for Case circa 1950's to 1960's. But that pattern never got into production - at least I have never seen another one. And the whole point of Ulster making pocketknives on contract for Case is that they could make some of the high volume patterns less expensively than Case could so that Case could offer some lower priced knives. So had it gone into production there would be a lot of them out there. Of course during this time Ulster was not a separate company but a division of Imperial-Schrade.

I hope that you did not think that I was saying that they are counterfeit. I was not. What you have there I believe are very rare prototype Case contract knives that were never put into production. Thank you for showing the Ulster for comparison as it verifies my theory. Those are some VERY special knives.

no i did not think that at all i know they came from the old ulster factory in the change over to imperial
