does anyone here remember,selling,finding and trading knives before the internet ,shows newspaper clasifieds,lawn sales auctions and the discriptions matched then they just moved the format to the internet

Man, I took a look at the other knives that guy had listed. They were all so overpriced it was laughable. I hope to heck no one falls for that crap. Peopl like that can ruin the collecting hobbie!

Not sure if anyone already coved this but I like when they use the word "RARE" so I do an eBay search and about 10 more "RARE" ones come up that happen to be for sale too.

All these misused terms has made it hard learning the knife collecting craft. But, after a few bad buys and a little more research things are becoming clearer.

I get tickled when seller says they know nothing about knives
but send in your questions and they'll try to answer them.

One alert flag is when they are selling them for a friend or
from an estate sale. May be true but also may be a way to
distance themselves from any claim of misrepresentation
or a prerequisite for the 'I didn't know' defense.

The allure of the overused term 'rare' may be wearing off.
I have recently seen the emergence of a new term that
should be sweeping the auction scene quicker than a swifter.

Basser. Very good post! The typical high pressure salesman with every gimick in the book except truth, although his claims border on truth, but some serious flaws ......anyone ever heard of ANY knife with a 34 rockwell hardness rating ????? which he claims is acceptable?????Might as well be carrying a Sterling silver blade that bends at the slightest touch!!!!

Came across another one that irritates me, "came from the estate of a WWII vet" (or Viet Nam vet) trying to give the knife some credence it doesn't deserve without out right lying and saying it is a WWII piece. In my mind, it's a veiled attempt to deceive.

i see nothing wrong with that sale. if a buyer really wants that particular item,, he will go to just about any lenghts to get it. i have seen one member here put astronomical prices on his wares.. no one says anything about that...
it is when i am looking for a vintage knife or antigue and all i come across is rough riders.. that doesnt erk me.. it just makes me laff.
so you do what you feel you need to do. even if it ids to vent your frustrations out here.
we all know there is plenty of that going around.

btw, welcome to the club. seems as if you have been in knife trade a long time, i hope you stick around here

3T - I was under the impression the original thrust of this thread was the over use of terms such as "rare" and "vintage" when the item up for sale isn't either one. Plus superlatives for a piece of canine excrement that don't really apply. I see no criticism here, regarding a sale like yours where the item is genuinely "rare" and honestly "vintage".

What happens when those adjectives are used on a brand new Rough Rider that's one of 300 up for sale (slight exaggeration to make a point)? It desensitizes the market place. When overused, the terms lose their meaning. Now an honest guy like you comes along with a product to sell that is the reason those adjectives exist but they've lost some of their impact because of auctions like that Rough Rider. Now when someone searches on "rare" and "vintage", he has to wade through all those Rough Riders to find the real ones like yours and it isn't long before "rare" and "vintage" overload kicks in.

As far as the high prices go, if you can get them more power to you. You mentioned selling the knife to an international buyer. Do you sell internationally often and what countries won't you ship to?
