Yes, I blew my knife-buying budget for the next six months, no exaggeration. It's just that when I saw what a whaler could & should be (after a little work on my part) I had to have more. Most of my very small collection consists of stag-handled knives, with just a few primitive bone, and I don't believe we'll see many better stags than on these whalers, at least not for a while. I don't think I "cornered the market" in any way (I don't have the scratch for that)---there are at least 22 other serialized stags out there, and probably many more than that unserialized---so there are plenty remaining for those collectors who want them.

Latest update;

Ryan called me this morning and apologized for not calling back yesterday. He was under the weather and praying to the porcelain altar. We had a nice visit about the knife and its problems. He was very apologetic for my less than stellar experience concerning this knife. He said to ship it back to Bob and he would take care it for him.

In the mean time he offered me a #36 e-toe "second" (since I'm going to EDC it) at no cost to me and said he ship the first one that didn't pass muster AFTER he personally made sure all the rest of it was right.

My opinion of the company went back up. I told him he didn't need to do that and that I was pleased that he just called me and discussed the knife issues.

SO, that's where I'm at. Bob has been kept in the loop and he's ready to do whatever it takes to keep his customers happy.

I wish the Whaler had worked out but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Well, been reading this post with interest. I suppose it does`nt matter much what I have to say about any of this cuz I would NEVER spend $285 on ANY knife unless maybe it was an old Randall hunting knife. But, having been on this earth over 60 years and worked in manufacturing of various sorts includung many quality control jobs, one old saying still rings true with me. "Fool me once shame on you.....fool me twice, shame on me". Unfortunatley I`ve seen so many companies who start out with the best intentions start shaving costs, TIME and wages thinking that no one will notice cuz some educated idiot who has taken charge thinks they have a method of manufacturing that is infallible. Unfortunatley that "infallible" method is (as well all know) susceptiple to fallibility, especially when parts, costs and how many units per days, hours and minutes becomes the focus and how much they put in their back pocket is the real bottom line. I really doubt that there are many "hand made" knives out there nowdays and if there are, I`ll bet some beancounter is still looking over his shoulder and trying to "hurry up" his work. Too bad this is the state of affairs nowdays, but unfortunatley it`s the truth. Hope all works out with that knife Wullie, I know I`d be pretty ticked off.

Hey Bob,

I got a full refund. Had a nice visit with Ryan about the whole deal.

He sent me at no charge a #36 "sunfish" factory second that is a solid EDC knife. It has a couple of blemishes that do not in any way interfere with the knife as a user.




Bob at Old Hundred was very gracious and stood by me throughout the whole mess.

As for that Whaler design? It's a great "looker" in my opinion, but far too lightly built to the jobs those knives were originally intended to be used for.
