Knives with Patents

I've come into this one since this thread started, not a patent knife but a Brit equivalent.



Probably made in Sheffield, Tang stamped Spratts, England. Well known (in the UK ) as pet food and accessories suppliers

I thought that I would revive this thread since I picked up another patented knife that I thought was really cool. It is marked SCHMACHTENBERG BROTHERS on the front tang of the main blade, which is deep etched SILVER KING. The pen blade has PATENT 449,449. The knife has what I think are pewter bolsters and the backspring is covered with brass. Small blade has GERMANY on the back tang. I usually don't buy German made knives but had to have this one. It's 3 5/8" closed.

Also posted is a Rare Joseph Rodgers round knife with a patent number of 7678 deep etched on the main blade. In order to open the blades you need to align the round rings till you find the opening which allows you to open and claose the blades. It has horn handles and is 3 1/2" closed.

The last one does not have a patent mark on it but have seen some like it that do. It is a folding manicure set that came in a leather pouch.

Any help on the patent for the first knife would be appreciated.

Here's my contribution. There is an English patents list but I'm not sure where mine falls into it since they started renumbering but I think this patent dates to the late 1700's early 1800's.

It's not a switch blade. It looks like a traditional lock back except the knob at the butt engages the back spring. As long as the knob is engaged it opens like a normal knife but won't close. Disengage the knob and then push on the back spring like a normal lock back and you can close the knife. It looks like it was designed so that if you knew you weren't going to use it for a long period of time you could leave the spring disengaged. It looks like around 1/4'' or so of the tip is missing and it has been reground but I suspect it falls into the category of a gentleman's self defense knife which were popular around that time. The scales are snakeskin pattern bone but worn. It's definitely an old one.

Here is a JACK KNIFE BEN with PAT'D 4/7/08 and I have a WINCHESTER with the same double fluted punch blade with the same tang stamp. Now if I could find a NAPANOCH cattle knife with the same punch & markings?

Robeson had many patents through the years.
I do not have an example of all of them, I don't think.
I probably cannot even present a coherent listing of them or pictures.

Michael mentioned the MasterCraft knives previously in this thread. Robeson introduced the line in 1929.

They also patented a handle/liner arrangement where the nickel-silver liners wrapped over and around the edges of the composite handle material, holding them in place and negating the need for handle pins. Patented 6/13/1916.

Below are photos of several examples of such knives and a tang stamp of the patent date. All but the fancy slant bolstered congress are mine. The congress was an Ebay auction knife from which I snipped the photos. It's a small photo. You cannot tell much from it. That is the only example of that pattern I have ever seen.

Of course, Robeson held the patent for the Cooper punch blade, dated APR 25, 05.

They made the Flame Edge tungsten-carbide coated knives in the 1950's and the Frozen Heat tempered knives from the same time period.

This is the only one I have with a patent no. for the liner-lock. This old Catt was etched Hunters Pride at one time if I recall correctly. Lost my books in a house fire. Its got some blade wear as you can see but my pics don't do justice to that beautiful old bone. Slim.

Thank's Miller Bro's. Except for in books I've only seen a few old Catt hunters at shows. The large ones usually have a very large number after the dollar sign. Slim.

just picked a E.B Sears pat # 487,562. its a Griffin's waterproofer . the knife was used in mining to crimp caps & fuses in 1892.

I hate to keep boring you with these old Jack Knife Ben knives but here is one with the Napanoch double fluted punch that reads PAT APPLIED FOR. What year do you think that would be?
