I have an R. Murphy, Ayer Mass. "pattern knife" from what I have read that I thought might be worth showing. I guess it was once used the way a mat knife or a box cutter would be used today? The removable blade is just under 6" and looks like it could be easily sharpened to hold a razor-like edge. I guess it could be used to cut material or leather as well? I assume Ayer, Massachusetts might still have a related industry or company for which this knife was made. Any information you might have is greatly appreciated!

I have several knives of this type by Murphy as well as a couple other makers(Henry Hyde is one).I believe they were used in the shoe industry which was very prominent in New England;especially in Massachusetts.
I find them at yard sales occasionally;usually in old tool boxes which I also collect.Some have various types of blades installed including saw blades.I'll have to dig them out and photograph them as I don't have any pictures at the moment.
