Unnumbered Remington knives
Hi everyone,
I'm new to AAPK (This is my first post), and I have a quick question. I have a dozen Remington folding knives, but two of them
have no pattern numbers. Are these modern reproductions or fakes?
Thanks for any help on this,
Doug

I wouldn't swear to it but I believe all the reproductions are stamped.
At one point in the production of vintage Remingtons they used ink on the pattern numbers rather than stamping. Presumably, this was done towards 1940 as a cost saving effort. In a vast majority of knives, those markings are no longer visible. That is likely what you have. I do seem to recall that advertising knives by Rem did not have pattern numbers.
Post some photos of your Remingtons as we all like to see them.

Re: Unnumbered Remington knives
douginwally,
The most common of all the Remington's is a 3 5/8" serpentine jack, the knife has a clip main blade and a pen blade, bone handles and a crest shield. These knives were used as premiums for the Wrigley Company and as other advertisers, I have only seen one (it's somewhere on this site) with a pattern number. The pattern number would be R1823, so, if you own a knife book, you can look it up and verify that it is a genuine Remington.

Re: Unnumbered Remington knives
One of the nicest knives I bought back before I decided to restrict my purchases to Robesons, was a Remington sleeveboard whittler with a sabre-cut master clip blade and the so-called "blood groove" feature. The handles were brown bone with a Federal shield. The knife did not have an etch on the master, nor was it stamped or inked with a pattern number. It was in near mint condition. I used to know what the pattern number should have been, but that has long since vacated my brain box.
I paid a good bit for it, $350.00 in 1988 or 89.
I asked the opinion of some dealers I respected and they were unanimous in their opinion that the knife was right, had not been cleaned, but the lack of an etch or pattern number was going to hurt it. They did not think any sophisticated Remington collector would buy it for what I had in it.
I'll look around to see if I might still have a photo of it.
I eventually traded it off for this big 3 3/4" Robeson Congress and $100.00 coming my way. That deal probably took place in 1990 or 91.

My knife has a clip main blade, a sheep foot and a spey, so it's not the same.
But thanks for your input.

philco,
Thanks for that link. It looks pretty straightforward. I'll try it once I photo my knife.

Robert, guess I'd better not put that 208 congress in my EDC rotation!

Re: Unnumbered Remington knives
I have an old ( not replica) "straightline" 2 blade jack Remington that has no model number. Were the straightline Remingtons their 2nd line knives? Did any of the straightlines have a model number?

Re: Unnumbered Remington knives
The consensus is that the straightline tang stamp knives were made on contract by some other maker than Remington. I guess since Remington was probably the best ever made at the time, they would be considered of lesser quality.
I am not sure about the answer to the pattern number part of your question.
