just pick this up this Holley Mfg co. from a friend in Ct. was wondering about the etch Washington knife ? maybe some can help with some info. thanks

Holley made two knives, both of the same pattern, but different sizes, that had handles made from The Charter Oak, in Hartford, CT that fell during a storm in 1856, having lived from sometime in the 12th or 13th century.

As I recall, they looked pretty much like this one.

I don't know the significance of The Washington Knife, but Holley apparently did a few historical commemoratives back in their day.

In another post (Whats your holy grail knife) I listed a Holly charter oak as my holy grail. I,ve seen a picture of one, but never have found one. The holly posted sure did remind me of it. Mark.

The name "Charter Oak" stems from the local legend in which a cavity within the tree was used in late 1687 as a hiding place for the Constitution charter.

The oak was then blown down in a violent storm about 150 years later and made into a chair that is now displayed in the Hartford Capitol Building.

The well connected Samuel Colt got some of that Oak and made Single Action grips from it.

There were many "things" made from the Charter Oak.

It's odd to see the depictions of where the Charter Oak was in the early days. I worked in Hartford, 8 or 9 years ago, in a home, now a condo, that was provided for Sam Colt's employees. I drove by, every day, where the Charter Oak was, long, long ago. In it's place was a scuzzy three story brick building, where sad, desperate people shuffeled in and out. Too bad.
