I havent ever seen a single bladed toe-nail with a easy open before
But it looks ok and the seller is a member here and has really sold some very nice knives on ebay in the past.
I'm certainly going to watch it.

Well, it may be old, may be scarce and may be collectable, but that baby will never win any beauty contests ::facepalm::

I just do not understand where beauty comes into the picture on a knife like this that is authentic and has so much history behind it. I'd bid a $1000 if I had it just to get things started. Where does beauty have anything to do with a knife like this????? Sorry

That's the beauty of collecting elephant toenails -- their ugliness ! That's why I had over 180 of them at one time , now I only have 45 (all Case) . I hope that everyone else thinks that it is too ugly ! ::drool::

Bob,

Hard to say, But as a betting man, I'd say Hang on to the 45 remainders you have, they are one of the beginings of what knives were all about, in fact the toenail/Sunfish was without question, one of the fore fathers of knives,IMO. One of the knives that one could really depend on in its day. Dull, Shapen,Dull, Shapen,Dull, Shapen,Dull, Shapen, no magic here. Why would anyone want beauty in a knife that was so utilitarian? Its an all out specimen of a Tool

Here's most of them . I've been "holding on" to these since I sold or traded the rest of them to begin my knife shop a little over ten years ago .

The Elephant Toenail Blades
The Elephant Toenail is a 2 bladed knife. I am only aware of one toenail made with a single blade. It was made by C. Platts and was a swell-center jack, easy open. This is also the only "easy open" toenail I have seen.

I got this from : [email protected] "the knife"........under "the blade"........

Do you think that the easy open notch could have been added? I.ve never seen a easy open sunfish. ::shrug::

This is an original knife all the way , however , it is very rare . I have only seen 2 others before during my 30 years of hunting elephant toenails and they were green bone . The easy open notch is correct .

I think it is original, too. Look at the backspring. It is not cut short as to fit another blade to it... ::shrug::

OK so I have been looking at this and the point bothers me, either a lot of dirt is under the kick or it has been sharpened by a grinder or possibly many years of sharpening. It just looks too high, the blade shape looks OK, point is round but even if it was pointed it would be too high. Maybe dirt.
The new GEC looks to be a Platts copy.

Almost four hundred dollars and a day and a half to go. At least it's too high priced for a fixer to wreck.
