New Snag

Just snagged this Challenge Cutlery Scout off the Bay. Not in hand yet, hope it's as good as it looks. Been cleaned but not too bad. Has a stable crack in the mark side handle. Bone handles. Does the "R" on the back of tang indicate a Reject?

Oh yeh!! After my problems with the GEC Conductor, I've desided to go back to the old knives. BTW, did you get your Conductor back from GEC? Is it OK now??

Tom, I did get it back and its perfect. I really was worried but it came back awesome.

I have only seen the letter R stamped on knives that were made in Germany;are you sure it is a Challenge Cutlery from the USA? I couldn't read the tang stamp.

K7K - I won't be able to answer that until I get it in hand. The seller said that he could read the large C and the large E in an arch and Cutlery Co. underneath. We'll see when it arrives. Got my fingers crossed that it's a Challenge.

I think the R indicates rostfrei--rustless-stainless-inox-etc.

Could be, but the blade does not appear to be stainless. Guess I'll find out when it gets in.

It looks like an early Imperial made frame with a Challenge stamped blade in it, if indeed the blade really is stamped Challenge.

I have never seen an old original Challenge scout knife with that style can opener blade.

The bail is not the correct style that should be on there and the jigging pattern of the bone is wrong.

If it si a Challenge stamped knife, it could be one of the Challenge knives that was made on contract by Utica. To me it looks like a Utica knife including the can opener.

Well, I certainly respect K7K, Dimitri and Steve's assessment of the knife. Comparing it to Willie's Scout knife in the same thread I see everything that you all are talking about. It will be interesting to see what it really is once it is in hand. The guy offers a 7-day return policy. The "R" stamp on the back of the tang has me a little concerned. I've seen that stamp but just cannot remember where. I went through all of my old knives and could not find it. Thanks fellers.

Here is a small blade with a R and the other ROSTFRI on one side and HARTKOPF SOLINGEN on the front side.

Well, I have the knife in hand and the stamp does indeed say Challenge, though I can't make out the rest of the stamp. As far as the can opener, the notch in the handle and frame are what you would expect for this type opener, does not appear to be any alterations/modifications to the frame or handles. The crack in the mark side handle is so tight as to hardly be decernable. This may indeed be a Challenge made by Utica as knifeaholic suggests. At any rate, I really like the knife and plan on keeping it. I've got $33 tied up in it including shipping. Be it cobbled or not, it is a nice knife.
