Who's signature is on this knife???

This knife has someones name signed into the handle. It is a Camillus and I think it has some age on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I agree, George Washington.

Knives like this were made by several cutlery companies, including Camillus, Robeson and others. I think there were five different companies.

I think they were all made in 1936 and for only one year. It was the anniversary of his birth or death, I forget which.

That's the way I read it at one time too. Supposedly, it's a scaled down version of the knife George's Mother gave him when he left home to become a surveyor. One of the price guides I have lists them for $300 (Really!). I'll gladly let mine go for half that.

George Washington was born in 1732, and died in 1799.
Orvet lists the date of manufacture of the Camillus version as 1932, which would coincide with the 200 th anniversary of his birth.

i cked my notes on this and found out that the reproduction was made in 1998 to be relased in 1999 for the 200th anniversary of his death and were only sold in a display case,unfortanetly they both seemed to have the 3 line tang stamp and are very hard to see any difference i have one i know is an original and have seen one boxed and u really cant see any difference

Here are two that I have:One is the Camillus and the other stamped B&B St.Paul Minnesota.Not sure who made the B&B;they specialized in advertising letter openers and pocket knives.Note the copyright date(1931)on the handle.This is the only B&B I've ever seen.Background is 1" squares.

MB; As you can see from the recent posts, each manufacturer made their GW knife different from all the others.

Brown & Bigalow's version was twice as large as the others.

Robeson's version had no writing on the handles.

I have no idea of the size of the actual GW knife.

Apparently, I have the dates wrong, too. Looks like it was actually 1932. I was told 1936 when I bought my little Robeson.

Guess I should have checked the historical records.

Well, as luck would have it I do have the last version that Camillus made in 1998. Still in the original box and sleeve

It is very easy to tell the difference between the one made in 1932 and the last one produced. The tang stamp is not the early 3-line stamp, there is no bail, the handles are Genuine pearl that are glued on, no pins, and it lacks the G.W. signature that the early one had.

It is a very well made knife, the pearl is awesome and the fit and finish is better than the one sold in 1932, IMO.

I also have several of the originals, as well as one like Ray posted the larger B&B model.

I collected these at one time, they were plentiful and did not bring much money, I don`t think they bring much money today either

well now i know why i couldnt tell the difference,someone kept the 98 knife and put one of the older ones in the box,thats the box i seen ,but not the knife i woulda remembered that one pretty pearl,and to think someone was trying to screw someone over at a knife show ,un heard of
